From jbeekman at fsu.edu Fri Aug 2 12:52:02 2024 From: jbeekman at fsu.edu (Jeff Beekman) Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2024 16:52:02 +0000 Subject: [Art-instructors] Storm preparedness Message-ID: Hi All, As you are all undoubtedly being made aware of, we've a storm system headed our way that they are predicting could cause problems for our area. Here are some tips, particularly for those newer to the area. Buy stuff now that will likely run out. This includes gas for you car, bread, tp, etc. With all the trees around ready and willing to take out our power lines, it is also not a bad idea to stock up on some non-perishable food! Here are a few things to have on hand in case of power outages in general. - flashlight - batteries - some cash - charcoal or propane if you have a grill, and a lighter - a cooler / ice packs - battery operated fans - pet food if applicable - a caffeine source. Remember you can?t use an electric coffeepot during a power outage. - containers for water (pots, pans, milk jugs, etc). Plan for about a gallon per person, per day. Old timers around here often thoroughly clean their bathtubs and use it for water storage. Go ahead and fill whatever you have available as the storm approaches. If you do want to purchase water bottles, it's not a bad idea to freeze a couple (don?t fill those to the top) so you won?t have to go out and buy ice when the power is out and everyone?s hot and potentially all the stores are closed. Ziplock bags can perform a similar function. Other tips: - Charge up all your devices; if you have battery packs, charge those too. If you don?t have a car charger, pick up a cigarette lighter adapter at the gas station when you?re filling up. - Clean your cooler & grill if you have them, and pick up loose heavy things outside like patio chairs. - Don?t buy a whole bunch of food that will spoil. Don?t let the dramatic news reports cause you to panic. Local news and radio are better sources of information, and nhc.noaa.gov. You can avoid danger with a minimum of common sense: stay inside during a storm, watch for flooding and downed power lines afterwards, and stay with a friend if there is a big pine tree looming over your house. Pay attention to what side of the storm we are on! The biggest winds are at the center of a hurricane and in its eastern edge. A category 4 can pass right by to the east and we?ll often just get a lot of rain. A tropical storm just to the west can drop hundreds kf trees and shut down the city electrical grid for a week. Since this has been our biggest issue in Tallahassee storms, what you really need to prepare for is discomfort: Think about what you will need during a couple of days of power outages and store closures: lighting, hydration, food, medicine, ways to stay cool. As far as university closures, shelters, etc: Visit alerts.fsu.edu for up to date info. At the bottom of the page, click FAQ and Helpful Links for lots more information and to make sure you are receiving notifications. You can also find all this information on the Seminole Safe app. Most importantly - be safe! Also, please let me know if and how you are affected! We are pretty great at helping one another out, but only if we know. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out! During this, they will hear from those pushing for the city to invest in the rebuilding of Railroad Square, much of which was destroyed in the May 10th tornadoes. While all are invited to show up at the 3:00 pm CRA meeting, it, unfortunately, conflicts with our 2:30 pm Fall '24 All College Meeting. To register my support in my absence, I've created an open letter, the contents of which can be read via the below link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FdPGI9EYvKypiuIoQTYNz1xWTs-1tqfIClG3PBLetVY/edit?usp=sharing If the contained feels like something that you would like to sign on to as well, I invite you to do so by including your name, position, and institution at the bottom. This will be shared with the city at the upcoming CRA meeting and any future meetings discussing the future of Railroad Square. Thank you, and please feel free to share this letter with colleagues at FSU, FAMU, TSC, and local K-12 institutions. The University?s mandatory First Day Non-Attendance Drop policy is in effect for the first week of Fall 2024 classes. The use of different delivery methods for Fall 2024 classes does not remove this requirement. Dropping students for first day non-attendance is necessary in order for the university to remain in compliance with Federal Financial Aid regulations (and students expect it). This policy requires all faculty and instructional staff to take attendance at the first class meeting of the semester. This policy is non-discretionary and applies to all classes, regardless of campus, space availability in the class, delivery method, course level, and/or academic unit offering the class. As a reminder, ?attendance? means making contact with the instructor as specified by the instructor at the start of the term. There are a number of ways this contact can be achieved. One way instructors can take first day attendance is via their Canvas course site(s). Please see First Day Attendance in Canvas for more information and options. If you use Canvas to satisfy the first day attendance requirement, please note that you still need to report your first day non-attendance drops as directed below. Methods for reporting and processing non-attendance drops: 1. Faculty ? For now, please continue to go to the following link for instructions and screen shots: How To Use the Attendance Roster Tool. 2. Staff ? For now, please continue to go to the following link for instructions and screen shots: How To Use the Attendance Roster Tool. 3. Email -- Send a message to registrar at admin.fsu.edu. Please include the student's name, EMPLID, the course prefix and number and the class section number. Staff will be monitoring this email closely and will be processing drops up until midnight on the 4th day of classes (Thursday, 29 August 2024). 4. myFSU Mobile -- Check and submit first-day attendance via the mobile version of Faculty Center. Simply download the myFSU Mobile app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play and follow these instructions (for now): How to Submit First Day Attendance via myFSU Mobile. 5th Day Classes and Non-attendance Drops: Once drop/add closes on Thursday, 29 August 2024, faculty will still be able to use the attendance tool for their Friday (30 August) classes. Please take attendance in any class that meets for the first time on Friday, 30 August 2024. Additional Information We are no longer processing administrative cancellation requests on the fifth day of classes. Students that need to drop all of their classes will need to be directed to the Withdrawal Services Office. This policy is crucial for maintaining accurate records and ensuring that our students are engaged from the very beginning of their courses. Please forward this email along to any adjunct or TA's that you are supervising, to ensure they are also aware of the policy and how to follow it. First Day Attendance Policy: * Requirement: Faculty must take attendance on the first day of class for all students registered for the course. This applies to both in-person and online classes. * Submission: Once attendance is recorded, you must submit it through the designated FSU system by the end of the first week of classes. This is essential for identifying students who are not attending and for administrative processes such as financial aid disbursement and course enrollment management. * Importance: Following this policy helps the university maintain compliance with federal regulations regarding financial aid, assists in identifying students who may need additional support early on, and ensures that all students are accounted for in their respective courses. Please make sure to follow this procedure for each of your classes. If you are unsure of how to submit first-day attendance or need a refresher, you can find detailed instructions for how to complete attendance submission HERE. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Your cooperation ensures that we start the semester smoothly and support our students effectively from day one.
