From jbeekman at fsu.edu Tue Sep 5 09:27:23 2023 From: jbeekman at fsu.edu (Jeff Beekman) Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2023 13:27:23 +0000 Subject: [Art-instructors] Kick Off Event Cancellation and Post-Hurricane Message-ID: Hi All, I am incredibly grateful that Tallahassee fared as well as it did with the hurricane last week. I am hopeful that all of you are okay, and, if not, I encourage you to reach out. We are a pretty good community, and there are many ways we can and absolutely would come together to help. Also, please keep in mind that we likely have students in our classes whose hometowns and families have been adversely affected by Idalia. I ask you to extend some grace in these circumstances. While I would never encourage any of you to reduce standards for evaluation or workload requirements, a little leniency regarding due dates and attendance issues connected to the hurricane's enduring effects are not out of the question. Due to delays related to the hurricane, the Kick-Off event that was scheduled for tomorrow evening is canceled. Simply put, I really want to feature student clubs in an important way, and the storm got in the way of this happening. I will be working with them, Theatre, and others to reschedule this event. The Award offers complimentary registration and Network Membership. It provides a robust professional development opportunity for early career academics to meet experts in the field, interact with colleagues from other parts of the world, and create networks and lasting connections. In our model, we have two kinds of Emerging Scholars -- In-Person and Online Only. Across all formats, Emerging Scholars play a critical role in the conference by leading discussions and chairing parallel sessions and are offered a publication pathway for their research. This way, we can provide maximum exposure for this selected group of researchers. The early application deadline is 10 October 2023. To apply, click the link above. You can submit samples up to the end of the fall semester. However, please submit the work once you have it. Part of our efforts is to ensure we are getting the full depth and breadth of the curriculum, and the earlier we receive work, the better we'll be able to judge where we might need more samples. Drop-off locations To make things easier for you, we have several drop-off locations: 1. Art office in FAB 2. Adjunct office on the 4th floor of FAB 3. ATL for those teaching in Painting/Drawing (please see Judy) 4. KRB for those teaching in Printmaking (please see Daniel) When dropping off physical work, remember to: 1. Fill out the paper form (there are forms in all locations - please alert me if you run out) and attach it to the work 2. Scan the form's QR code and input all information (the form now allows you the option to add a photo - thanks for the suggestion, Audrey!) 3. As a courtesy, please email me (edidonna at fsu.edu) to alert me that you've dropped off so that we can pick up the work New! Qualtrics form for digital works Link: https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4GFX5wDJz2ZgJhQ The form will accept up to four files. However, please submit a separate form for each student sample. Judith Heumann Good Morning, My name is Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn. I am an Atlanta based artist, activist, curator, and educator. Currently, I am curating a Photographic Installation for the UAB SHP Research Collaborative that will be held during the CEDHARS Symposium that Addresses Ableism in Research, Healthcare, and Higher Education being held January 25-26, 2024. We happily invite artists and/or subjects with or without a disability(s) to submit photographs of their disability themed tattoo for Indelible: Stories of Permanence to be held UAB WHARF at Lakeshore - 3810 Ridgeway Dr. Birmingham, AL 35209 in January of 2024. Artist(s) and/or individual(s) interested in participating can submit their image as well as a brief summary explaining how their tattoo and disability correspond via Google entry form. PLEASE NOTE: Indelible: Stories of Permanence is a photographic installation that will remain installed for one year at the UAB SHP Research Collaborative. Once the show is removed, it will be archived, and become property of the University of Alabama- Birmingham. Production of installed images will come at no cost to the artist and/or individual submitting. SHOW NARRATIVE Indelible: Stories of Permanence discusses the personal narratives of tattoos belonging to, both the disabled and ?for now? non-disabled forms. What does a tattoo mean to the wearer? Does the person wearing the tattoo have a disability? Does the tattoo recall a memory related to disability? Perhaps the non-disabled individual has a tattoo pertaining to disability or a person with a disability who has made an impression on their life? Much like a tattoo or a brief or prolonged interaction with a person - disability is indelible. It is permanent. SHOW GUIDELINES Artists wishing to submit should follow the guidelines stated below. 1. Subjects should wear black, white, or nude clothing without intricate designs and/or text. 2. Acceptable backgrounds for images are black, gray, off-white, or white. 3. Please make sure your subject (self) is well lit. 4. Submit a maximum of three images (180 - 300 res) - Portrait, Candid, and Close-up (tattoo). 5. Include your subject's tattoo narrative in the Google form. Submissions open, Friday, September 22nd, 2023 and close, Sunday, October 22nd, 2023 at 11:59PM. Artists/Individuals wanting to submit to Indelible: Stories of Permanence may do so by clicking the link provided below. Those accepted will be notified no later than Wednesday, November 1st, 2023. INDELIBLE: Stories of Permanence Thank you for your time and assistance with creating opportunities for both disabled and non disabled artists and individuals who will answer our call for submission.
