I hope this email finds you well as we approach the start of the fall semester. I want to let you know that we plan to hold the annual Fall Teaching Orientation on Tuesday, August 22nd from 8:45 am - 12:30 pm. We will provide some bagels, fruit, other refreshments, and coffee in the morning. Please note that we will not be providing lunch since we plan to end early. This orientation contains training that is required by the University for all instructors who will be teaching any class in 2023-2024 academic year. All GTAs must attend this orientation every year in order to keep their teaching award. Please be sure to reserve this date and time for this required training. We will also provide some information on several new initiatives, departmental and legislative updates. As a reminder this orientation was originally designed for those teaching in Foundations but has since grown to include others since we cover information required for all instructors. To minimize the time and extraneous information, much of the Foundations-specific information will be included in a teaching handbook that I spent the summer creating. For anyone teaching in another area, there is a lot of good information in the handbook that is applicable to any class, but some of it is Foundations specific. I?m happy to share it with all. Even though much of it will be in the handbook, there are some Foundations initiatives that I do want to spend a little time on: * Non-majors in our classes * Our new reading initiative. This fall it is an excerpt from Time Travel: A History, by James Gleick * Art into Words (new initiative) * Research Dossiers that will accompany student submissions for major projects * & briefly, the handbook The basic agenda is attached. ?> Faculty, please reach out to any adjuncts or GTAs in your area to be sure they plan to attend this event and receive the required training. Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing everyone in a couple of weeks! Unfortunately, FSU has been reticent in providing specific syllabi language, citing that there isn't one universal approach faculty and programs should take toward the use of AI. Their advice is that individual instructors and programs come up with their own approaches regarding what's prohibited, allowable, and encouraged regarding AI. In pursuit of that, Mona Bozorgi recently shared with me the language Texas Tech has provided their instructors, which I think articulates a useful range of approaches toward AI in the classroom. It could be a good starting point as you come up with your own language. Before passing this along to all of you, I sent this to Joshua Morgan, who is spearheading FSU's approach to AIAI (Academic Integrity + Artificial Intelligence). He says the attached Texas Tech statements are fine to share, but suggests: ... that any student-facing announcements and/or statements about AI be accompanied by the following disclaimers: * Instructors reserve the right to orally/verbally assess/evaluate how well students have mastered course learning objectives and discipline-specific skills/career competencies if suspected or admitted use of AI technology is potentially being used to violate the Academic Honor Policy, circumvent learning processes and/or career-readiness preparation, or otherwise jeopardize students' abilities to perform work functions in an ethical, quality manner. * Instructors reserve the right to modify all course assignments/assessments?involving AI technology or otherwise?to ensure that students are upholding academic integrity, growing in the career competencies expected by employers and subject-matter experts, and/or serving the public good in an ethical and quality manner. I'm guessing that Foundations and other Areas/Programs might have specific ideas regarding how they want AI handled in their classes. Therefore, I ask that instructors communicate with their faculty heads to ensure all courses are in alignment with area/program goals. Importantly, if you do end up using Texas Tech's language as a starting point, please acknowledge that your language is adapted from theirs. Lastly, I apologize that this is coming so close to the beginning of the semester! I've only heard back from Joshua this morning. All Best, Jeff p.s. Celeste, can you see the four attached statements and Joshua's language above added to the suggested syllabus language in SharePoint? That can be a real problem even if a storm doesn?t come here. Keep medicines refilled and essentials stocked up during hurricane season (pretty much all fall): pet food, toilet paper, emergency cash. Be sure you have at least one good working flashlight and fresh batteries for it, and a car charger for your phone. If you have backup chargers, keep them charged. Have a stock of non-perishable food, in case of power outages. A tropical storm in 2016 left most of Tallahassee without power for several days (some for 2 weeks) due to trees falling on power lines.
