From vcole at fsu.edu Tue Nov 1 11:39:06 2022 From: vcole at fsu.edu (Tori Cole) Date: Tue, 1 Nov 2022 15:39:06 +0000 Subject: [Art-instructors] [Art-mfastudio] 2022 Visiting Artist Lecture Series presents: ANTOINE WILLIAMS - Thursday Message-ID: I hope you will join us for a Visiting Artist lecture by Antoine Williams this THURSDAY NOVEMBER 3rd at 7pm. The lecture will be held in-person at the Fine Arts Building, room 249. Here is a little information about Antoine Williams' practice: Antoine Williams' mixed-media work investigates his cultural identity by exploring power, fear, and the perception of signs within society. Heavily influenced by science fiction, and his rural, working-class upbringing in Red Springs, North Carolina, Antoine has created his own mythology about the complexities of contemporary Black life. An artist-educator, Antoine received his BFA from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and his MFA from UNC Chapel Hill. He helped start the God City Art Collective in Charlotte, where he participated in several socially engaged, community-based art projects, such as pop-up art shows, afterschool art programs, underground rap shows, and film festivals. He has exhibited in numerous national exhibitions including at the Mint Museum of Art, Michigan State University, Columbia Museum of Art, Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, 21c Museum, as well as many other venues. Williams is an Assistant Professor of Drawing in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida. We hope to see you for an exciting lecture with a Q&A afterward. Sincerely, Daniel Luedtke On behalf of the 2022 Visiting Artist Committee [cid3930080293*image001.jpg at 01D8ED45.C44237F0] [cid3930080293*image002.jpg at 01D8ED45.C44237F0] Daniel Luedtke __________________________________________ Assistant Professor Department of Art Florida State University ___________________________________________ Pronouns He/Him www.dnml.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... With a strong application, you have a great chance of being selected! All awards are applied to your Financial Aid package. If you have questions about how the award would be applied in your specific case, please contact Financial Aid directly. All BA, BFA & MFA Studio Art students in good academic standing enrolled Fall 2022 ? Spring 2023 are eligible to apply. Students selected for awards should see awards funding applied to their FSU account early in the Spring 2023 semester. Application deadline: Friday, November 11 at 11:59 pm APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: To apply, go to https://fsu.academicworks.com/ After login, fill out the General Application first, and then select College of Fine Arts/Dept of Art Application and complete the art portion as outlined below. Both parts of the application must be completed to be considered for an award. Preparing Your Art Award Application ? Make It Great! Here?s How: 1. Develop a concise yet compelling artist?s statement between 150 and 300 words in length. Start with a brief biographical statement, followed by a description of the ideas that drive your work. SPECIAL NOTE for Undergraduates: If you wish to be considered for an Ann Kirn Scholarship (a $1000 award limited to undergraduate students), you must include a thoughtful description of the role that design plays in your studio practice. 2. Select the five (5) to eight (8) images that best represent your studio work. Formatting your images: Be sure that your images are photographed well and cropped as needed. File sizes should be less than 2MB and either jpg or png. A video will be considered as one image. Submit your video to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link within your application. Still images should be in a square format: To get your images into a square format, open the image in Photoshop. Go to Image/Image Size and size the image to 1080 pixels on the longest edge at 72dpi. Then, go to Image/Canvas Size, and make the width and height 1080 pixels x 1080 pixels and choose the canvas extension color as black or white (or choose a color). Keep the anchor dot in the center. Choosing your images: A balance between breadth and depth is ideal. If no two images are related in any way, your submission can appear unfocused. If all of the images are extremely similar, you can come across as short on imagination. Most importantly, be sure all of the images presented are your very best. It is better to submit six great images than to submit six great ones and two weak ones. 3. Write a brief description of each image and provide the title, size, medium, and date completed. This is a great opportunity to build on the general comments from your Artist?s Statement through specific information about each image. 4. Additional Scholarship & Practice, Awards, Volunteering, and Leadership If you would like the faculty to know about any additional achievements you have had recently, please list them here. These could include: 1. Additional scholarship and practice, such as an artist residency, community project, etc. 2. Specific awards you have received (list the name of the award and date) 3. Volunteer hours (list the particular volunteer activity and the approximate number of hours) 4. Leadership roles you have taken on (such as a leadership role in a student organization) SPECIAL NOTE: The application as a whole may evolve over several days and is likely to take many hours to complete. Putting the necessary time and thought into it will greatly improve your chances of success. Furthermore, once you have laid the groundwork with this application, you will be better prepared for future applications for awards on or off campus. Sample applications and tips for writing your artist statement are posted on the department website: https://art.fsu.edu/opportunities/scholarships-grants/department-of-art-student-awards/ Questions? Do you have a suggestion or feedback to share? If so, we would love to hear from you! FSU Art foundations faculty routinely seek best practices from educational symposia, accrediting bodies, and peer institutions. We habitually work to revise and update our program curricula to reflect these practices and to ensure that our curricular goals are being met. While we regularly check in with these groups, it has been a while since we formally reached out to students to request feedback. We recognize that great ideas come from a variety of sources, experience levels, and backgrounds. We hope that you will reach out to share your ideas, thoughts, and requests. The Foundations Program is comprised of 6 courses: Success Strategies, 2D, 3D, Digital, Drawing, Contemporary Art & Design Foundations that are designed to be taken in your first 2 years at the university. These courses are preparatory (foundational) for transitional and upper-level classes. We seek to prepare you for intermediate and upper level classes in a variety of ways: providing applied experience with different techniques and ways of making, exposing students to a wide range of materials and equipment, extending occasions for idea development (individually and collaboratively), offering opportunities to discuss artwork through critical dialog, prospects for reading and research, and providing access to curated information. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded curriculum across 6 courses while engaging critical thinkers and creative makers. So, reach out! We want to hear from you about how you (or we) are doing. We want to know if there is something you really like about one of your classes. Is there something you want to learn more about? Or, how about if there is something that you dislike or question the value of? We?d love to hear about any of these (and more). Not only does this offer you an opportunity for your voice to be heard, but also it is helpful for your instructors to know what we are doing well and what we can be doing better. Contact Anne Stagg at astagg at fsu.edu to set up a 15- or 20-minute meeting (in person, phone or zoom) and share your thoughts. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If the student is graduating before Spring '24, please ask them for an email and phone number that they can be contacted through post-graduation. While we, unfortunately, will not be able to physically mail artwork, we will absolutely reach out after our NASAD visit to facilitate the return of work. We do have a collection spot at CAB, but for now, I'd appreciate your storing any collected work in your offices (including the Adjunct/TA office). We are in the process of figuring out the transportation logistics, which we will share shortly. Should you have any questions please reach out to your Area Heads/Directors. Area Heads/Directors, should you have any questions feel free to reach out to me directly. Again, this is all about showcasing the great work our students are producing and the awesome teaching you do as instructors!
