I hope you had a good break. The student art awards are coming up quickly. The deadline is Jan 25 and students were just sent a reminder email to apply. If you could please encourage your students ? that would be most helpful. Thanks! Remember to apply for the Department of Art Student Awards ? You can?t win it if you?re not in it! These awards recognize the strength of our students and that means YOU! The Department of Art provides awards to Studio Art students whose work demonstrates exceptional achievement. Awards range from $250 to $1000. We are typically able to provide 30+ awards ? so with a strong application, you have a great chance of being selected! All awards are applied to your Financial Aid package. If you have questions about how the award would be applied in your specific case, please contact Financial Aid directly. To apply, go to https://fsu.academicworks.com/ After login, fill out the General Application first, and then select College of Fine Arts/Dept of Art Application and complete the art portion as outlined below. Both parts of the application must be completed to be considered for an award. Application deadline Monday, Jan 25 at 11:59 pm Preparing your Art Award application ? make it great! Here?s how: 1. Develop a concise yet compelling artist?s statement between 150 and 300 words in length. Start with a brief biographical statement, followed by a description of the ideas that drive your work. SPECIAL NOTE for Undergraduates: If you wish to be considered for an Ann Kirn Scholarship (a $1000 award limited to undergraduate students), you must include a thoughtful description of the role that design plays in your studio practice. 2. Select the five (5) to eight (8) images that best represent your studio work. Formatting your images: Be sure that your images are photographed well and cropped as needed. File sizes should be less than 2MB and either jpg or png. A video will be considered as one image. Submit your video to Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link within your application. Still images should be in a square format: To get your images into a square format, open the image in Photoshop. Go to Image/Image Size and size the image to 1080 pixels on the longest edge at 72dpi. Then, go to Image/Canvas Size, and make the width and height 1080 pixels x 1080 pixels and choose the canvas extension color as black or white (or choose a color). Keep the anchor dot in the center. Choosing your images: A balance between breadth and depth is ideal. If no two images are related in any way, your submission can appear unfocused. If all of the images are extremely similar, you can come across as short on imagination. Most importantly, be sure all of the images presented are your very best. It is better to submit six great images than to submit six great ones and two weak ones. Media awards: Each Focus Area has a $250 award (Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Digital Media, Photography). You will have the option of selecting one or more areas that best describes your focus, but your images must reflect that. For example, if you want to be considered for the Painting Award, you must submit one or more images of your best work in Painting. 3. Write a brief description of each image and provide the title, size, medium, and date completed. This is a great opportunity to build on the general comments from your Artist?s Statement through specific information about each image. SPECIAL NOTE: The application as a whole may evolve over several days and is likely to take many hours to complete. Putting the necessary time and thought into it will greatly improve your chances of success. Furthermore, once you have laid the groundwork with this application, you will be better prepared for future applications for awards on or off campus. Sample application and tips for writing your artist statement are posted on the department website: https://art.fsu.edu/opportunities/scholarships-grants/department-of-art-student-awards/ Questions? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Greatings faculty, I hope your 2021 is off to a nice start! Below is a message from Leah to the Art faculty? Just a few updates and reminders as we head into the spring semester. Best, Cosmo ------------------------------------------------------------ Hi all, Happy New Year! I hope you are all having smooth and productive starts to your spring semester. I am writing with just a little library news to kick off the first week of classes: * The InterLibrary Loan (ILL) platform will soon get a much needed facelift as part of a system upgrade. The new look will be much cleaner, more accessible, and will have better compatibility with mobile devices. The upgrade has been customized to be align as closely as possible with the content of our current forms, so the way you enter your requests shouldn?t change much (except hopefully it will be an easier and more enjoyable experience ?). The roll out will happen next week and if you have any technical difficulties after the launch please don?t hesitate to let me know so I can pass them onto ILL right away. * Fine Arts library and instruction will continue online and asynchronously this spring 2021 semester, just as it did in fall 2020. I have updated my Instruction Program Google Doc to reflect this, so if you are interested in embedding the Canvas modules I have created for each visual and performing arts program into your course sites this semester, see this Doc for direct links: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16TTz4216zxu3keraRytyIp7U1iL-EzynXLk3skwxOh0/edit?usp=sharing * Please continue to use the materials suggestion form on the main library website to enter requests for library purchase. As a reminder, the end of our ordering period occurs about mid-spring semester each year, with the foreign vendor deadline falling at the end of February and the domestic vendor deadline in late March or very early April. After that point I will not have funds available until shortly after the next fiscal year begins. I?ll let you know as soon as I have the exact ending dates, but in the meantime I encourage you to submit forms for any individual items you may need for this spring as well as summer and fall 2021 curriculum planning and research needs. * Otherwise, library operations will continue as they did in Fall 2020, including Curbside pickup. Please note she has included supplemental materials links in the pdf that I hope you find useful in incorporating into your class or sharing with the students before each talk so that they can have an enhance experience- Thanks, Lilian From: Meredith Lynn > Subject: Museum lecture series resources for faculty Hello department chairs, I?m writing to ask that you share the attached PDF with your respective faculties. As Preston mentioned in your meeting last week, MoFA has partnered with the Departments of Art and Art History to offer an exciting program of guest speakers this spring, including Earlonne Woods and Nigel Poor from Ear Hustle, Hank Willis Thomas, and Wendy Red Star. It is our hope that faculty members from across the college will direct students to these events and consider incorporating these speakers into course content. We have created the attached PDF to help faculty share resources with students. For each speaker, we selected a few links to articles, videos, and websites that serve as a good introduction to the speaker and their work. All three of the events will cover topics that are relevant to students across our college and our communities. Museum staff is available to meet with faculty, students, and classes in support of these programs. If you or your colleagues have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Preston, or Annie Booth. A big thank you to Art and Art History, and particularly Jessica Ingram, for helping to make these events possible.
