As such, it is a good time to put forward a plan regarding how to handle these. Here are some steps we would like you to follow should a student inform you that they have received a positive test result: 1. Respect student privacy. If this is told to you during a Zoom session, offer to transition the conversation to a break-out room or ask them to stay on to continue this conversation for a few minutes after class. If it is told to you in a non-public forum, please do not share this with other students. 2. Be accommodating, and reach out to the Area Head/Director overseeing the class you are teaching for support in determining what this looks like. Accommodations could include deadline extensions and changing assignment parameters in ways that enable them to be accomplished while quarantined and perhaps suffering from covid-related health or financial setbacks. What's most important is that the learning outcomes are covered. Flexibility in terms of how these are met is definitely encouraged. Your Area Head/Director should help you figure this out. 3. Reach out by email to Jeff Beekman. In this email please include the student's contact information, a list of upcoming assignments (with materials list/s), and any information you feel might be relevant. I will: A. reach out directly to the student to ensure they have what they need, B. report the positive test result to the university, and C. contact other instructors within the department with whom the student is currently enrolled, so they can take appropriate action. We all know by now that students are not required to reveal a positive Covid diagnosis. We also know that students will get sick from illnesses other than Covid. While the above reporting protocols do not need to be followed in these cases, I still suggest being as accommodating as possible. No one is asking for a relaxation of standards, but please be flexible in terms of how these are met. These are tough times for everyone. Thanks, and should you have any questions, absolutely feel free to reach out. While our goal was to establish internal mechanisms within the department to ensure our students are being cared for in an organized and consistent manner, it appears that even self-reported Covid-19 diagnoses cannot be shared without specific written consent. While we seek clarification on what form "written consent" should take, we ask you to keep all student self-reported cases private. You can absolutely seek advice from the Department and specifically the Area Head overseeing the class/classes you are teaching regarding the types of accommodations that can be made. Still, in no way should student names or other personally identifiable information be disclosed. Florida State University is committed to not only the academic success of our students, but also their well-being. Nationally, students are reporting increased levels of distress, putting them at risk for depression, substance abuse, and other negative outcomes. As a faculty or staff member, you may be the first one to notice signs of distress in a student. It is important that you are prepared to respond to such concerns. To address this concern, the Florida Board of Governors has contracted with Kognito and implemented their At-Risk for Faculty and Staff online training. It is a simulation-based training designed to help faculty and staff members strengthen their ability to notice signs of emotional distress, use techniques to discuss concerns, and refer students to appropriate campus resources when necessary. While the simulation uses a faculty-student situation to demonstrate, the information and skills you will learn apply to faculty and staff. The simulation should take approximately 45 minutes to complete, depending on your level of engagement. The Florida Board of Governors is requiring this training for all state university employees to include both faculty and staff. It is our expectation that you complete this training no later than October 9, 2020. Instructions for completing the training are listed below. If you have questions about the training, please contact University Counseling Center Kognito liaison, Jaymee Spannring, at jspannring at fsu.edu. We thank you in advance for your compliance with this important requirement. Instructions * Visit the Kognito webpage on the FSU University Counseling Center's website. * Sign in with your FSU account credentials. * Launch Kognito's At-Risk for Faculty and Staff mental health awareness training. * Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the training simulations. * Receive your Certificate of Completion at the end of the training. The below is pulled from these and subsequent communications with Emily Pritchard of the Secure Assessment for FSU Exposure Response (SAFER). If you need to report a student with COVID, follow these 3 steps: 1. Report to the university: a. Go to my.fsu.edu b. Click "Daily Wellness Checker" c. Click the three-lines menu in the upper right of the screen d. Select "Contact SAFER Team," and fill out the form that pops up Alternatively, if a student informs you of a positive COVID diagnosis via email, you can simply forward it to: covid19 at fsu.edu 2. Report to the department (no names, please): a. If you are a Faculty member, contact Jeff Beekman b. If you are an Adjunct or Grad instructor, contact Jeff Beekman and the Faculty member overseeing the class. -Faculty can help determine appropriate accomodations and provide guidance should problems arise. 3. Share the following links with the self-reporting student: https://uhs.fsu.edu/coronavirus https://uhs.fsu.edu/coronavirus/testing-faqs -------------------------------------------------- Additionally, attached is SAFER's "Faculty Covid Classroom FAQ. It reiterates a lot of the above and more. Lastly, we've had a few instances where people from across the university have contacted faculty and instructors in our department to inquire whether specific students have Covid. You cannot give out this information. Again, this violates our students' FERPA rights. Thanks all, and thanks to Rob for sharing your notes! I've reached out a few times on behalf of students already, and the process is super easy. Here's the message I received from Tyler Shannon, Asst. Dean/Director of Case Management, regarding the program and how to access it: "The laptop loaner program was created in conjunction with the Provost, Vice President Kyle Clark, and Vice President Amy Hecht to provide technology for any student in need. We have lots of technology to hand out to those in need. Please feel free to send any student our way, it?s a very ?open? program and we have hundreds of laptops available ? Feel free to provide my email/contact info to any student and have them reach out. I?ll then get them squared away." Here's Tyler's email: tdshannon at fsu.edu After receiving a request, the student is sent a loan agreement form. The student signs and returns this form along with their current mailing address. The laptop is then sent directly to the student. There doesn't appear yet to be an end date on the loan. This program is eligible for graduate students. As this program is designed specifically to help out FSU those students facing financial difficulties, I ask that you not simply share details of this program with all the students in your classes. Instead, please share this only with those whom you can identify a need. Thanks! In that spirit, I am encouraging you to consider making your class content asynchronous on November 3 and also not having major projects due on that day. We are not sure what COVID-related complications might arise at polling places, so I think this small gesture could go a long way in not compounding the extra stress of that day. Keep in mind that many of our students are seeking ways to make a difference somehow and that young people are particularly necessary as poll workers during the pandemic. We don?t want students to feel as though they can?t volunteer in this capacity, so consider planning to have extra flexibility for students around the election. This is not mandatory ? it?s just a suggestion ? but please be thoughtful of the added stress and frustration many people are having during these particularly challenging times of heightened political, racial, environmental, and health crises that we are all trying to navigate.
