The Art Foundation Program is one of 15 departments within the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University. Admission into the Program is highly competitive, attracting a diverse and talented, national and international student body. The department’s innovative curriculum prepares first year art and design students to enter one of the School’s ten art and design majors upon completion of the Program: Art Education, Communication Arts, Craft/Material Studies, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Kinetic Imaging, Painting + Printmaking, Photography and Film, or Sculpture + Extended Media.

The school’s newest facility, the recently renovated Depot Building, houses a state of the art sound studio with motion capture capabilities, a 6,000 sq. ft. interdisciplinary research space and a new student art gallery. The VCU Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), designed by award-winning architect Steven Holl, is poised to open to the public in 2017 and will be dedicated to flexible and responsive exhibitions and performances that examine art, design, and performance from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives (ica.vcu.edu<http://ica.vcu.edu>). VCUarts is within walking distance to the Richmond Arts District and the nationally recognized Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one mile from campus. VCUQatar (qatar.vcu.edu<http://qatar.vcu.edu>), the university’s first international branch campus, is located in Doha, Qatar and serves students from more than 25 nationalities in design, visual arts, and art history.
VCUarts is seeking a dynamic designer, engaged colleague, broad thinker, and enthusiastic teacher who is dedicated to the innovation and investigation of design in a contemporary art context, with the acumen to effectively teach first year art and design students and upper level and graduate design students. The successful candidate will be an accomplished, versatile designer with expertise in contemporary approaches, concepts, techniques, and critical issues as they pertain to design, and art in general. Based in the Art Foundation Program that will be directly affiliated with a design major department, this Arts Faculty member will teach four courses per year including, Surface Research, an introductory art and design two-dimensional studio course, and upper level undergraduates and graduate courses in a major design department to be determined by the successful candidate’s area of design expertise. Additionally, the successful candidate will oversee the Surface Research studio area, mentoring faculty and aiding in the course’s ongoing curricular development, working alongside the Director and faculty who oversee the other three core studios: Space Research, Time Studio and Drawing Studio. Experimentation, conceptual development, critical thinking and making skills, and an interdisciplinary attitude, are some of main curricular emphases of the Program. The successful candidate will be able to engage in future curricular planning as an aspect of the ongoing conversation about the evolution and future of first year art and design education and within their area of design expertise.
This Arts faculty Position will serve on Department, School, and /or University committees; maintain and build an active practice; manage and facilitate the Surface Research studio area, and work collaboratively with members of the department and School of Arts to foster a progressive atmosphere for exploring the arts. The ability to communicate with students on multiple levels, and from multiple media areas, and eagerness to teach and develop both first year and upper level study is essential. The faculty member will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. The faculty member must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
* MFA in design and/or equivalent professional training and experience.
* Teaching experience required; college/university teaching beyond graduate school level preferred.
* Familiarity with contemporary design history and theory.
* Proficiency in teaching a wide range of aesthetic, conceptual, and technical aspects of design.
* Ability to teach contemporary introductory art and design concepts, techniques and skills to first year arts students.
* Evidence of national/international career profile and active exhibition record.
* The faculty member must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
