[Agedirectors] seeking information

Hello Pam and all -

Regarding the process, the team identified (non-health science) gerontology programs only. They went state by state searching for gerontology programs which are still active. At the time, the AGHE dBase had not been updated. The team did go through the AGHE list for Gena using the gerontology dBase as a reference, so Gena knows what is current.

As background, this project arose out of a question Rona Karasik and I had about the number of active gerontology programs while working on an AGHE S&G chapter. Like all of us, we are disappointed to learn programs have been closing. We wanted to know how many gerontology programs are still operating at the UG and GR levels...and this is how the dBase came to be.

I've hired a research assistant with my Chair funds to help with a few other projects. I have mentioned this opportunity as something else for her and another RA to work on this summer and into the fall.

If you, Karen Fingerman, and others could forward your current information, we will start a 2.0 version of the dBase. Please note, your website needs to be current as this link is included for all programs.

BTW-it is worth noting, we appreciate the challenge of keeping a website fresh. We also understand some programs are faced with more pressing issues. Current contact information will be of great help until your website is updated.

Hope this explains things a bit better.

Take good care

PS - the road to you know where is paved with good intentions!

Hi all,
This is Pam Saunders from Georgetown University. I direct the MS in Aging & Health which is a gerontology program. I noticed our program was not on the list sent around. I’m curious what the methodology was for creating the list.
Thanks,

Good afternoon Julie,

I am aware that information about programs is also available here https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.aghedirectory.org/__;!!PhOWcWs!w30ABb0QsUB97I_vv6Gvg6dprbm32kMcVUPhC-CtlAVAn1Bf2pjIkOkv4acZaPI35lpaGgSmGCJJ0vjo5HMfdV0yfkB7$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.aghedirectory.org/__;!!PhOWcWs!2Xpv-GKTbHS8yUT1kDe-gMkdkfm90EnlmbV6ynXtItxdb2K6BagBm5Ikb3nUlV7Jl9SkxDfMdXa223IoNtjBjg$>. It was recently perfectly updated for the USF School of Aging Studies. Thank you.

I think we all have the same goal, which is to highlight programs that focus on gerontology so students are aware of educational opportunities and can search for programs in a comprehensive, complete, and accurate database. I am not suggesting that the Champions of Aging do more work. But conducting a proper, comprehensive search of gerontology/aging programs to enrich your already existing database seems appropriate. In fact, I believe that the members of the GSA SRPP leadership group held just earlier this week discussed conducting a larger effort to contact the universities and colleges on their own list to update their own information with a comprehensive search based on recommendations by the directors of the relevant programs. This is very exciting. I can assure you that the USF School of Aging Studies would be happy to participate in this effort as needed.

I look forward to assisting in building on the current effort and again, thank you for your work to move us in the direction of a comprehensive database of programs facilitating education about gerontology—the study of the various aspects of aging.

Best,

Ross

Hi all,

It was great catching up with everyone. Thank you so much Neil and Callie for continuing to keep us engaged.

I am sending the document with gerontology programs listed that we discussed during the meeting. I know Joann and her group at AGHE is already working on updating the document so surely the information is now more complete. This may be a great way to promote gerontology programs.

Ross

Joann – this is most helpful. Thank you. Look forward to receiving the email from Ross.

Gerontology can get lost in the mix – so keeping it separate has value. At the same time – providing students with information about other programs is also useful to ensure they can access the programs most closely aligned with their interests. We will look into this further on our end.

Many thanks for your help.

Take good care – Julie.

Hi Julie,

I believe Ross sent out the note so he can forward it. At the Center Directors meeting, someone asked if programs other than “gerontology” could/should be included. I mentioned that APA’s Division 20 (Adult Development and Aging) maintains a list of graduate programs related to aging: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.apadivisions.org/division-20/publications/graduate-studies__;!!PhOWcWs!w30ABb0QsUB97I_vv6Gvg6dprbm32kMcVUPhC-CtlAVAn1Bf2pjIkOkv4acZaPI35lpaGgSmGCJJ0vjo5HMfdQ05uqUa$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Furldefense.com*2Fv3*2F__https*3A*2Fwww.apadivisions.org*2Fdivision-20*2Fpublications*2Fgraduate-studies__*3B!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-tU!B1Aa2S69ST9ZXnRLfmV5CuC_2HZTSvR5dZkoqTvfb39pUN3sMa3IMDVziDFS6ZcsnWj-SvC2Z3Mymkyz1jx8NQ*24&data=05*7C01*7Crandel*40usf.edu*7C1615d82dcc674d52156208da343cb5fc*7C741bf7dee2e546df8d6782607df9deaa*7C0*7C0*7C637879732629642588*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C3000*7C*7C*7C&sdata=Xu0BvYLPSrSc*2B5jYSKUiumJgcJnBdmpAbZvabzNlRes*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSU!!PhOWcWs!2Xpv-GKTbHS8yUT1kDe-gMkdkfm90EnlmbV6ynXtItxdb2K6BagBm5Ikb3nUlV7Jl9SkxDfMdXa223JiC1B4XQ$> which could be cross-referenced or integrated.

I can see arguments on both sides - keeping the focus just on gerontology (as this is a GSA and AGHE list) versus extending it so that students/others are aware of the range of educational/training options. However, keeping track of gero programs may be a more manageable path, but you could link to the D20 resources. Dear Ross and Joann –

Greetings to you both.

As you are aware, our department was involved in the development of a gerontology database of programs in the US. As noted in the article on the GSA website and on the UNO Gerontology website, the focus was on gerontology programs only. I did not have our Champions of Aging or Research Assistant include Aging Studies program in the listing. We tried to keep this separate as the information is of interest – particularly to programs, like ours, that still retain gerontology as its name.

I understand people have learned about the database through a message sent out via the GSA Connect Gerontology Directors listserv. Do either of you still have this message? I would welcome the opportunity to see it so we can understand what has been communicated and work to address any misunderstanding.

Also – we may want to explore how to add Aging Studies to our listing when I can find the funding to support this additional work. To our knowledge, there is no other comprehensive database available of this nature. We believe it is of benefit to us all.

It is worth noting, this project was funded entirely in-house. It took 100+ hours for the team to go through each state to identify programs doing various web searches. The team acknowledges there could be errors – but hopefully they are few and far between.

Thanks in advance for your help and for contributing updates.

Take good care – Julie.
