I just did some research/presentation about this new generation of students (Gen Z). We found that they are more motivated by what will 'look good' and help them get into grad school / job applications; so we've planned activities that they can 'use' in that way (Walk for Alzheimer's/Apraxia, Special Olympics, etc.). They also just want info in small manageable chunks, instead of meetings (I can't say I blame them); so we've started using Instagram for announcements and info (just set up the account with the advisor as the 'admin', so the permissions can be granted to the NSSLHA officer in charge of communications, then switched the next year). I hope these suggestions are helpful. We tend to have better participation w/ evening virtual meetings than on-campus in-person meetings and we always have a guest speaker at meetings, which are monthly. Throughout the semester we usually have 2-3 additional ?events? students can participate in if they want to. Usually these are our state Legislative Day (spring) and ASHA Virtual Advocacy Day (fall), 1 community service event per semester, and 1 social event per semester. We also use a ?course? in our LMS, Canvas to make announcements to members and any time announcements are posted for professional development or community outreach activities, I try to ?highlight? the ?reasons why? students should attend such as ?great networking opportunity? or ?experience advocating for profession?, etc. because students are more likely to participate if they can see how the activity will benefit them when applying for jobs (SLPA) or grad programs.
