<p class="MsoNormal">The deadline for 3Ls to apply to the <a href="https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/employment/honor-law.html">
Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Honor Law Graduate Program</a> is <b><span style="background:yellow;mso-highlight:yellow">Monday, September 23, 2019</span>.
</b>The Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses nuclear power plants and regulates their safety. It also regulates the commercial use of radioactive materials, such as in hospitals. Also, although it appears that the deadline for the Honors Program for the Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission passed over the summer, there is a <a href="https://www.ferc.gov/careers/college-rec/car-opp/attorney.asp">
brief statement on FERC’s website</a> suggesting that they are looking for attorneys, including students who are currently pursuing a JD. FERC regulates most aspects of wholesale electricity as well as the siting and construction of interstate natural gas pipelines.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Additionally, the <a href="http://www.floridaopc.gov/">Office of Public Counsel</a>—a state office in Tallahassee that represents consumer interests in utility ratemaking proceedings (electric utilities and other utilities)—is looking for

<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Competitions</u>—Remember that it can never hurt to try. Even if you do not win, just participating in competitions is a great experience to put on your resume, and in the case of the Florida Air & Waste Management Association, it is
a great networking opportunity. Some competitions also offer cash prizes. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Now is the time to think about entering a competition at the
<a href="http://flawma.org/events/2019-conference/">Florida Air & Waste Management Association’s conference on October 28 and 29 in Tallahassee</a>. This Association is a large group of environmental professionals, including lawyers, and at the Association’s
annual conference they offer student competitions. You apply ahead of time to enter the competition and then attend the conference on October 29 to participate in the competition. Participating in a poster competition—in which you prepare and present a
poster on a current topic of environmental interest—is a great opportunity for you to connect with professionals.
<b>All that you need to do to apply for the poster competition is submit a 300-word (or fewer words) abstract to the contact in
<a href="http://flawma.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Student-Poster-Competition_2019_FLAWMA.pdf">
this bulletin</a>. </b>Students can also form teams to participate in an <a href="http://flawma.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/ECI-Student-Competition-for-University-Students_2019_FLAWMA.pdf">
environmental problem solving competition.</a> The challenge this year is to propose sea level rise resiliency tools for a rural coastal community in Florida—a perfect challenge for environmental law students. And if you manage to team up with students from
FSU Engineering, this would create an even stronger team. As with the posters, this is a great opportunity for you to practice presenting in front of a group of professionals and to get to know potential future employers. Proposals for posters and team competition
entry are <b><span style="background:yellow;mso-highlight:yellow">due at midnight</span></b><span style="background:yellow;mso-highlight:yellow"> on
<b>October 7, 2019</b>.</span> Poster presentations and team presentations will be on
<b>October 29, 2019, at the Turnbull Conference Center </b>just down the road from the law school.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Note that there will also be a <b>student-mentor breakfast</b> at the Florida Air & Waste Management Association conference, at which students will “get paired with an experienced professional to spend 45 minutes enjoying breakfast, sharing

<p class="MsoNormal">Finally, for students who are writing papers for seminars or other purposes, please keep in mind a rich array of
<b>environmental student writing competitions</b> listed in the attached document, which was helpfully prepared by Katie Miller of the FSU Law Research Center. You can win money for a winning entry in some of the competitions, and sometimes winning or being
a runner up means that you can publish your paper or present it in front of a group of professionals. It can’t hurt to try! Note that many deadlines are in April or May, but some are as early as December.
