Jeong-Su Kim passed away on December 29 following a period of illness. He was surrounded by his family and friends, and is survived by his wife and daughters. I know I share the sentiments of our faculty, staff and students when I say we are all honored to have known Dr. J. Kim, who enriched the lives of many during his 16 years with the college. He will be missed immensely. Dr. J. Kim joined what was then the College of Health and Human Sciences as an assistant professor in 2006 and was an invaluable and highly respected leader, collaborator, researcher, instructor, mentor and friend. More importantly, his kindness, enthusiasm and passion for his work, our college, and programs undoubtedly encouraged and inspired countless students. Through his roles as graduate program director for the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences, associate director of the Center for Advancing Exercise and Nutrition Research on Aging, and as a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Successful Longevity, the Pepper Institute, and the Institute of Sports Science & Medicine, Dr. J. Kim?s impact and contributions spanned the wider FSU community and beyond. The college is forever grateful for Dr. J. Kim?s warm spirit, generosity, and genuine kindheartedness. Gifts in honor of Dr. Kim may be made through the FSU Foundation and will fund the creation of a Dr. Jeong-Su Kim Graduate Scholarship and Research Fund in the department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences. Donations can also be made directly to the family via Zelle (850-339-0597) or Venmo (@youngim420). His family is planning a memorial service on January 6, 2024, at 11 AM at Tallahassee Korean Baptist Church, located at 4225 Crawfordville Road, Tallahassee, FL, 32305. The service will also be streamed on YouTube here. The service will be conducted in Korean; simultaenous translation from Korean to English will be provided via Zoom here (Meeting ID: 822 0067 6961; passcode: 1229). If you plan on attending the service in person, the church asks that translations using cellphones be listened to via headphones. I ask that you keep Dr. J. Kim?s family in your thoughts as we continue to reflect on the contributions he made, both personal and professional, to all of us. I know the loss of Dr. J. Kim will profoundly impact many here at the college. Please remember that the university offers support services, including grief counseling, to all faculty, staff and students. I encourage you to take advantage of these services and have included contact information below. Arjmandi, a Professor at Florida State University's Department of Health, Nutrition & Food Sciences, presents his research on the role of nutraceuticals and functional foods in preventing and treating chronic disorders of inflammatory origin. His work focuses on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, exploring how nutraceuticals like soy and its isoflavones, dried plum and its polyphenols, and other dietary elements can positively impact these conditions. This research offers valuable insights into the potential of food-based approaches for managing and preventing these widespread health issues. Hi Friends and Colleagues - I'm looking for help and suggestions to invite the right FSU folks to attend a lecture the CPC is hosting next week. I'm particularly interested in folks with an interest in arts therapy, mindfulness, loneliness/social engagement, intergenerational engagement, and/or dementia interventions. Do you have suggestions (names/emails)? Or feel free to forward this email to any folks you think should be included if that's easier. Description: This Fall, the Claude Pepper Center (CPC) launched a new program called Opening Minds through Arts (OMA) - an evidence-based, intergenerational art-making program for people living with dementia that allows older people living with dementia opportunities for self-expression and social engagement. See info, pictures and videos of the FSU-OMA program: https://claudepeppercenter.fsu.edu/opening-minds-through-art/. Next week, we are hosting OMA founder Elizabeth Lokon and her team members Meghan Young and Krysta Peterson (see attached flyer for details). The OMA team will provide a lecture about this art-making program and describe a new online intervention platform they recently developed - "ScrippsAVID." ScrippsAVID leverages key strengths of the in-person OMA program but focuses on those in community settings with all levels of cognitive function and has potential to reduce loneliness and dementia risks. I believe there is great potential to partner with the Scripps team and seek funding to test the ScrippsAVID platform as a dementia intervention. We are also hosting two hands-on workshops for folks to see what the in-person OMA program looks like - one will be on Thursday the 18th from 10:30-11:30 and the second will be Friday the 19th from 3-4 pm. Participants will create an abstract art project using the no-fail OMA "recipe." Heads up - there could be glitter involved... Please let me know who you think is important to invite to these events and who I should reach out to! Thank you!!! Links to the sign-ups for the art-making events: Sign up for the Thursday January 18 10:30-11:30 am art-making session here Sign up for the Friday January 19 3-4 pm art-making session here We are providing parking for the Thursday morning art-making workshop and the afternoon lecture in the adjacent lot to the Pepper Center. Thank you so much for any help you can provide so we can engage members of the FSU community in this event! Dawn ------------------------------------ Dawn C. A lesson from neurofibromatosis type 1 Join Zoom Meeting Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder characterized by various clinical manifestations (e.g., tumors, skin problems, cognitive deficits). The progression and severity of the disease vary across ages and individuals. To date, there is no cure for this lifelong disease yet. Individuals with NF1 have a life expectancy that is 8-15 years shorter than the general population. However, we know little about how their neurobehavioral (cognitive, socioemotional, and behavioral) outcomes change across lifespan and their predictors. My DEaR lab aims to comprehensively understand neurobehavioral development across the lifespan using advanced quantitative methodological approaches (e.g., time-varying effect modeling and multilevel modeling). The talk will provide a sampling of studies examining patterns and predictors of neurobehavioral outcomes of individuals with NF1 from childhood to older adults. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... From: Hira, Radhika Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2024 9:08 AM To: Hira, Radhika Subject: Funding Opportunity: Innovation in healthy longevity Hello, My name is Radhika Hira and I support the National Academy of Medicine (NAM)'s Healthy Longevity Global Competition, an innovation prize program seeking ideas that promote health, functioning, meaning, purpose and/or dignity for people as they age, at any stage of life. The application only requires a 2-page description of a bold, new idea or early-stage project, which can originate from any discipline, field, or sector. NAM Catalyst Awardees will each earn a $50,000 USD cash prize, unlock exclusive access to future funding opportunities, and join a global interdisciplinary network! Under the Global Competition, the NAM is now accepting applications for its U.S.-based Catalyst Awards. The application period is open from January 29, 2024 and closes March 11, 2024, at 11:59 pm EST. Individuals and teams may learn more and apply here. We encourage individuals with diverse backgrounds, ideologies, and perspectives to consider applying today. I'm reaching out to provide more information, including resources to easily share this unique opportunity with your networks. You can find our digital toolkit that includes draft social copy and graphics for easy use here: https://healthylongevitychallenge.org/nam-healthy-longevity-catalyst-awards-digital-toolkit/ More information about the Catalyst Awards and Global Competition can be found below. Please feel free to modify or adjust this copy to share with your networks: The NAM Healthy Longevity Catalyst Award Competition offers $50,000 USD prizes to individuals or teams with bold, new, and potentially transformative ideas that aim to improve the physical, mental, or social health and well-being of people as they age. The NAM strongly encourages individuals with diverse backgrounds, ideologies, and perspectives to apply. Ideas or projects that aim to reduce health disparities, promote health equity, combat ageism, or apply human-centered design principles to engage older adults in the work, are also of strong interest to the NAM. Ideas with the potential to dramatically change health as we age-even if they're high-risk-are encouraged in this unique competition. No preliminary data are required when submitting an idea. Applications may originate from any sector, field or combination of fields (e.g., biology, chemistry, medicine, engineering, behavioral and social sciences, technology, data science, and policy). Most US-based individuals or teams are eligible to apply. In addition to the winners, all Catalyst Award applicants advancing to the final stages of the review process will automatically be considered for additional funding as part of the subsequent phase of the Global Competition, the Accelerator Phase, with awards from $150,000 to more than $1 million USD. Awardees from both phases will be well-positioned to compete in 2026 for the NAM's Grand Prize for a breakthrough innovation in healthy longevity. I'd be happy to share additional background or communications materials if you are interested in sharing this opportunity with your network and help transform the future of aging.
