From vsimon at fsu.edu Mon Oct 2 09:00:14 2023 From: vsimon at fsu.edu (Victoria Simon) Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2023 13:00:14 +0000 Subject: [Isl] Today- ISL Brown Bag w/ Leo Liu Message-ID: You are invited to hear Faculty Affiliate Leo Liu, Ph.D., speak on "Clotting with the Flow: Can we Bioengineer Solutions for Heart Attacks and Strokes?" at the next Institute for Successful Longevity Brown Bag Talk today, October 2, at noon. You can watch his presentation via Zoom at https://fsu.zoom.us/j/93088181053 Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Dr. Liu will take questions from the audience after his talk. Dr. Liu tells us that myocardial infarction (MI) and strokes remain the leading causes of death in the modern world. This can stem from a clot forming in a narrowed artery and obstructing blood flow - a process called occlusive high-shear thrombosis. Current anti-thrombotic therapies, such as Aspirin for example, which target the blood biochemistry, remain largely ineffective while also leading to excessive bleeding risks. Being able to understand how acute MI and strokes lead to ischemia or fatality (~25%) and eventually developing novel preventive drugs plays a significant role in successful longevity. Recent studies have shown definitive results suggesting high-shear thrombosis is primarily controlled by a biophysical aggregation of cells and proteins mediated by high-shear flows, in contrast to stasis required for "textbook" blood clotting. In his seminar, Dr. Liu will present how they drive multi-resolution understanding of this flow-mediated clotting process at concurrent molecular, cellular and continuum scales using multiscale computational modeling (in silico) combined with thrombosis-on-a-chip devices. He will also discuss how novel treatment can be inspired and developed from the unconventional biophysics predicted by their in silico and in vitro models, and how their in vitro models could be utilized for drug screening and potentially point-of-care diagnostics with minimal amount of blood draw. His talk will be November 6 at noon. He will be presenting on his research titled "Using Informatics and AI to Support Older Adults? Comprehension of Lab Test Results.? Dr. He tells us that there is increasing interest in promoting the use of information and communication technology to engage patients in their own healthcare. Patient portals can provide patients with secure access to lab test results, doctors? notes, and medication lists, as well as facilitate communication with healthcare providers. Viewing laboratory test results is patients? most frequent activity when accessing patient portals, but lab results can be very confusing for patients. Previous research has explored various ways to present lab results, but few have attempted to provide tailored information support based on individual patient?s medical context. In this project, Dr. He?s team aims to gain insights into older adults? challenges in understanding lab test results and act upon them, and design an informatics tool called LabGenie to support older adults? understanding of lab results and engagement in their own care. To design such a tool, they conducted three studies, and he will talk on those findings. After his talk will be a short Q&A where you will get a chance to ask him questions pertaining to his research. We hope to see you there! As you know we have been looking for a candidate informally and in accordance with our by-laws I'd like to formalize the process by asking for volunteers to screen any candidates who come forward. We will also be replacing Walter Boot as Associate Director by the end of the semester, though that does not need more than a vote on candidates by affiliates and advisory board members. So, if you have some interest in joining such a committee, please let us know. And if any of you have interest in the Director's position, even tentatively for a future time, let us know too.
