From vsimon at fsu.edu Thu Mar 2 08:38:26 2023 From: vsimon at fsu.edu (Victoria Simon) Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2023 13:38:26 +0000 Subject: [Isl] Upcoming Events and Deadlines Message-ID: Hello and good morning affiliates! We are one week away from our Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship application deadline, and less than one month away from the ISL Planning Grant Application deadline. We also would like to share with you that the GSA President Jim Nelson, and the GSA CEO James Appleby, will be visiting FSU on March 29th for our Student Poster Day. Having a good turnout and showcasing all of the wonderful research being done here is going to have a great impact on the visit! Be sure to share the information with your students! Please see the below information on how to apply and for other pertinent information for upcoming ISL events. 1. ISL Planning Grant applications are open! Do you plan on submitting a grant proposal? We are eager to learn who is working on projects so please let Victoria know if you are putting a team together. The purpose of this program is to promote collaboration between FSU research faculty by providing funding for a new direction or continuing support of existing research or creative activity, with the goal being that the project will improve the opportunity for successful longevity in aging populations. This program is modeled on the CRC's planning grant program, so this proposal is seen as the first step toward collecting data that would lead to federal funding. The maximum award amount for the ISL Grant Program is $25,000. a. The application deadline is March 20, 2023 b. To apply or for more information, please visit https://isl-fsu-sm.smapply.us/ c. If you need help applying, our previous administrative assistant made a very helpful How-To apply video, click here to watch it! 1. We also are accepting applications for the $1000 Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship for student research. The $1000 award is open to your graduate students. Previous award winners of the Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship will not be eligible to win the scholarship award a second time. Watso- "Beet-ing Cardiovascular Aging" Message-ID: You are invited to hear Joseph C. Watso, Ph.D., speak on "Beet-ing Cardivascular Aging" at the next Institute for Successful Longevity Brown Bag on March 6. In his talk, Dr. Watso will explain his research into consuming beetroot juice as a countermeasure for high dietary salt in older adults - a population at an increased risk of salt-sensitivity, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. You can watch his presentation at noon via Zoom at https://fsu.zoom.us/j/95617023080. Dr. Watso, Assistant Professor in FSU's Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology and a Faculty Affiliate of the Institute for Successful Longevity, will take questions from the audience after his talk. Nine-in-ten adults eat too much salt (i.e., sodium chloride). Excess salt intake raises blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk - the leading cause of death worldwide. Most Americans do not follow optimal lifestyle patterns (e.g., reducing salt intake) because of time and effort. However, dietary nitrate supplementation is a convenient countermeasure for excess salt intake. For example, in rats and humans, daily nitrate-rich beetroot juice improves blood vessel function and lowers blood pressure. Interestingly, a recent study in rats found that nitrate-rich beetroot juice prevented increases in blood pressure with salt loading. Thus, there is a scientific premise for dietary nitrate to counteract the cardiovascular consequences of high dietary salt in humans. While young adults tend to have salt-resistant blood pressure (no change in resting blood pressure after dietary salt loading), older adults tend to have salt-sensitive blood pressure (increased resting blood pressure after dietary salt loading). Moreover, nearly four in five American adults over the age of 60 years old have high blood pressure (i.e., hypertension). A Design Sprint is an intensive problem-solving session in which students work in teams to develop solutions to a real-world problem. Participants learn the Design Thinking process for understanding problems and developing innovative solutions. The session closes with teams pitching their ideas to win prizes and fame! The "How Might We" (HMW) for this Design Sprint is: Given that many people spend the final years of their lives in senior care facilities or hospitals, how might we design a home environment that evolves with the needs of aging individuals to provide the care and comfort they need to spend their latter years happy and healthy at home. Undergrads from all majors are encouraged to register. Valuable Prizes, Free meals, Event Tees, and great fun! The Flyer is attached! The ISL Student Poster Day is two weeks away on March 29th! We have guests visiting during the event, GSA President Jim Nelson and GSA CEO James Appleby will be joining us as guest judges for the posters and to meet with students and faculty. I wanted to take this time to reach out and ask who is going to be attending the Student Poster Event so we can get a headcount to order the correct amount of food. Also, if you have a student who is going to be presenting, they must reach out to me no later than Friday, March 24th so we can get an accurate count on poster stands and create scoring sheets. If you are not able to attend the Student Poster Day Event but want to meet with the visiting guests at another time on the 29th, we are putting together a few small meetings so everyone who wants to talk with them has the opportunity to do so. The Flyer is attached! Thanks for your help in spreading the word. Please feel free to contact me with questions or let me know if you would like to get more involved! I will also need all students who are attending to let me know no later than Friday 03/24, that they will be presenting so I can get a final headcount. See below for more event details: Student Poster Day is on March 29th from 11-1:30pm in the Psychology Building Atrium, Level 2. The GSA President Jim Nelson and the GSA CEO James Appleby will be there, so having a good turnout to showcase student research at FSU will be vital to their visit. There will be a cash prize for best poster as well as a light lunch. Poster award could involve graduate or undergraduate students working with you. Please note that undergraduates are not permitted in the Poster Day event as the primary presenter of the poster, however, the poster could have their name on it if it involves multiple members of a team and is presented at the event by a graduate student. Postdocs in addition to graduate students are eligible to present. Please let Victoria know if you have a student or post-doc who will be presenting so we can get the correct number of poster stands set up. Please also let Victoria know if you yourself plan on attending so she can get the proper headcount for food. We look forward to seeing those of you who can attend! Please invite all students and postdocs with interest in attending to come in person (please ask them to email me at mtaylor3 at fsu.edu to indicate that they plan to attend the talk in person or zoom). We encourage faculty across campus to attend via zoom ? those located in the Pepper building will be attending in person if space allows. Please email Dr. Miles Taylor (mtaylor3 at fsu.edu) if you would like to attend in person ? there are only 15 available in person slots at this time. Please RSVP to ensure that we have sufficient breakfast and that there are spaces available. If you would like to attend via zoom instead, the address is https://fsu.zoom.us/j/94778311547.
