ISL Associate Director, Dr. Walter Boot, will be giving his talk on December 8th at noon, via Zoom. Titled "The Potential Role of Virtual and Augmented Reality in Supporting the Health, Wellbeing, Independence, and Quality of Life of Older People," we hope this topic will intrigue and inform you all! Dr. Boot tells us that we are witnessing the intersection of two significant societal trends, 1) a dramatic increase in the number of older people in the U.S. and around the word, and 2) the rapid proliferation of technologies that promise new opportunities to help older people maintain health, wellbeing, social connectivity, and purpose in life. However, promises of technology solutions will not be realized unless older adults' needs, preferences, and abilities are considered, and older adults are placed at the center of a user-centered design process. Further, large-scale trials are crucial to confirm the efficacy of technology solutions for diverse groups of older people. This talk will provide a sampling of studies that have examined the impact of existing and emerging technologies, including virtual reality and augmented reality, developed using an iterative, user-centered design process, and the impact of technology-based interventions on cognitive, behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes. This research has found that through careful design, scalable, useful, and usable technology solutions can provide tremendous benefit to older people. After his talk will be a short Q&A where you will get a chance to ask him questions pertaining to his research. We hope to see you there! There you can meet with other Faculty Affiliates to discuss shared interests and generate ideas for our Planning Grant. We have also included some non-affiliate members this year to bring fresh perspectives and new collaboration possibilities to the table. If you are newly affiliated or need a refresher, ISL offers Planning Grants worth $25,000 to our Faculty Affiliates each year. We can award up to 4 Planning Grants. The main goal of these grants is to promote interdisciplinary research here on campus. We have had many fruitful research projects result from these grants that led to National Funding. These Planning Grants can be a great pilot to obtain larger funding to support your research. One or more of the Investigators must be an ISL Faculty Affiliate to apply. While we wish him a warm goodbye, we would also like your vote on a new Associate Director for ISL. We have been speaking about Lynn Panton, Ph. D., stepping into the role of Director. While we wait to hear from the Provost's Office on filling that position, we would like your vote on her addition as the Associate Director for ISL. Dr. Lynn Panton is a Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Integrative Physiology here at FSU. She is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Panton's research interests are in strength training and the effects on the physiological measurements of strength, blood pressure, cholesterol, body composition, and functional outcomes of healthy elderly adults and chronically diseased populations. Her recent research has focused on the effects of strength training in women breast cancer survivors. She received her BS from Emory University, and MSESS and Ph.D. from University of Florida. Dr. Panton's CV is attached for your review and we have included the ISL Goals below to remind you of what drives ISL as you make your vote. To understand the mechanisms of age-associated disorders and functional and cognitive declines. ________________________________ To develop the best holistic interventions to counter those declines. ________________________________ To disseminate this knowledge to the community, to aging adults and to their care-givers. ________________________________ To cultivate the scientific, social, and political leadership on this issue that will engage the nation. Should Lynn Panton be the next ISL Associate Director?
