The scholarship provides $1,000 in support of student research. In her nomination of Meynadasy for the award, Natalie Sachs-Ericsson, Ph.D., professor of Psychology, cited Meynadasy?s strong work ethic, collaborative nature, and her passion for impactful research. ?I am proud to recommend her for the Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship for student research,? Sachs-Ericsson said. ?She has and continues to demonstrate an exceptional ability to contribute to the field of aging research, a quality I believe merits award.? The scholarship will support Meynadasy in her research investigating emotional processing within the aging brain and examining cognitive decline and dementia. In her research, Meynadasy said, ?I aim to enhance our understanding of both normal and dysfunctional cognitive and emotional processes and test the efficacy and utility of interventions that promote healthy emotional and cognitive aging.? Neil Charness, director of the Institute for Successful Longevity, said Meynadasy was a good example of the high quality of graduate study in aging at Florida State University. ?Meynadasy?s work supports ISL?s goals of understanding the mechanisms behind age-related disorders and developing interventions to combat functional decline,? Charness said. ?We are pleased to honor her with the Esther & Del Grosser Scholarship.? From: David Lipten Sent: Monday, March 15, 2021 12:01 PM To: Neil Charness Subject: Patrick and Catherine Weldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation Neil, Hello. The above has issued an RFP "...for health-related research that has the near term potential to improve health, well-being and the quality and equity of care in long term care facilities, for adults who are 65 year or older and are long term residents in nursing homes, assisted living, and other congregate care facilities. There are two requirements of the Another Look grant program. The first is that the majority of the data analysis must use already existing datasets rather than new data that is collection for this study. Although existing data must be the primary resource for the proposed analysis, the Another Look grant program will allow researchers to allocate some grant funds to the collection of new data if it will enhance the utility of the project outcomes for improving quality and equity of care. The second requirement is the inclusion of stakeholders from clinical, programmatic or policy arenas on their project team to help inform the research. Stakeholders are expected to assist in defining the research question and protocols or to work with the researcher to develop products such as infographics, tool kits or training materials that are based on the research findings and could be used by those stakeholders to improve quality of care or quality of life for residents in long term care. The Foundation welcomes all topics related to improving quality and equity in long term care facilities but is particularly interested in supporting research focused on high priority issues that were identified through an environmental scan recently conducted by the Foundation. These high priority topics are: * Improving the quality and availability of palliative, end of life and hospice care * Evaluating the impact of innovations in workforce roles and expertise on quality of life for residents and staff * Assessing the role of family members and informal caregivers on resident quality of life * Reducing the negative effects of isolation and loneliness on resident health and well-being * Addressing racial, ethnic, gender or income disparities in care quality or health outcomes * Addressing the specialized care needs of resident populations with developmental disabilities, serious mental illness, or addiction https://donaghue.org/grant-opportunities/ March 31, 2021 Letter of intent deadline April 30, 2021 Responses regarding LOIs provided to applicants June 23, 2021 Applications due December 2021 Grant term begins As always, please let me know if there's interest and how I can help move things forward. Mike Mitchell Office of Research Development Florida State University mike.mitchell at fsu.edu Call or Message me on Teams research.fsu.edu/ord/ Subject: You're Invited! Collaborative Collision: Health 2021 [cid:image001.png at 01D71B02.F8281560] Good Morning! On behalf of the Office of Research Development I'd like to invite you to the next installment of our Collaborative Collison interdisciplinary networking program! In April 2016, the then Office of Proposal Development organized the first campus-wide interdisciplinary networking program at Florida State University. Five years and 15 events later, Collaborative Collision has brought together thousands of members of the FSU research community, helped launch countless new collaborative research teams, and positioned FSU to make breakthrough discoveries and compete for external funding. As a participant of that original Collaborative Collision, I hope you'll join ORD in celebrating this milestone by revisiting the first Collaborative Collision topic - Health! Collaborative Collision: Health 2021 (April 6th, 7th, and 8th) is perhaps the best example of the kind of convergent topic, with diverse disciplinary interest, that Collaborative Collision was designed to address. As we would all likely agree, a lot has changed in the world of Health in the last five years! Whether you are working to find better ways to prevent and treat chronic disease, exploring the causes of health disparities in different populations, analyzing massive data sets to provide healthcare policy insights, developing new technologies to improve patient outcomes, creating new works of art that challenge the way we think about mental wellness, or seeking to better understand the very building blocks of life as we know it, nearly every member of FSU's research community could plausibly be involved in a project related to health. Collaborative Collision: Health 2021 seeks to cast the widest possible net and host the largest group of potential interdisciplinary collaborators in Florida State University's history. To maximize the potential number of participants while keeping the event manageable, Collaborative Collision: Health will take place over three separate days, each with a different focus. Physical Health (April 6th) focuses on researchers working on topics directly related to the condition of the human body, Social Health (April 7th) includes the interaction between our social systems and individual health outcomes, and Mental and Emotional Health (April 8th) explores the brain, psychological and emotional wellbeing, and individual behavior. Researchers are invited to attend all three events, and may select to present at any combination of the three. I am also excited to announce that this event will feature keynote presentations from FSU Alumni currently in leadership roles at the National Institutes of Health. * Dr. Tara A. Schwetz (B.S. '05 in Biochemistry) is the Associate Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health, within the Immediate Office of the Director (IMOD). IMOD responsibilities include central oversight on NIH activities in research funding, management, administration, and information technology, as well as coordinating trans-NIH efforts across all 27 Institutes and Centers. Prior to assuming this role, Dr. Schwetz was the Chief of the Strategic Planning and Evaluation Branch in the Office of the Director at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) where she led several efforts, including conducting an evaluation of the Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance to facilitate evidence-based decision-making and developing the NIAID Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis Research. * Dr. William T. Riley (M.S. '81 and Ph.D '84 in Clinical Psychology) is the Associate Director for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, and Director of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research. During his 12 years at the NIH, he also served at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Riley's research interests include behavioral assessment, technology-based interventions for health risk factors, and the application of engineering and computer science methodologies to the behavioral sciences. Participation in Collaborative Collision: Health 2021 also provides an opportunity to apply for up to $10,000 from the Collaborative Collision: Seed Fund! This webinar is a collaboration between the ENHANCE Center (https://www.enhance-rerc.org/) and the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation (https://www.rercapt.org/), two centers funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. Title: Artificial Intelligence in Accessibility and Rehabilitation When: April 21st, 11:00am-Noon EDT Where: Register in advance for this webinar here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_KMfJbaCgRPqdFroPLDWqbg Abstract: Society is on the cusp of major changes in the way people interact with systems and products due to the addition of artificial intelligence (AI) in consumer products. Early examples include automatic captioning, driver assistance systems, and voice assistants. While we are still learning how the general public interacts and benefits from AI, there are some early insights on how AI can help people in the accessibility and rehabilitation domains. This talk will provide context on AI, examples of its use in these domains, and potential risks specific to these domains. Speaker: Aaron Steinfeld, PhD is an Associate Research Professor in the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. His educational background includes degrees from the University of Michigan and a post doc at U.C. Berkeley. He leads research centers and teams on accessible transportation, inclusive web technologies, and human-robot interaction. His research focuses on human interaction with complex systems. __________________________________ Walter R. Sent: Monday, March 22, 2021 3:59 PM Subject: New NSF program: DASS, virtual town hall Dear Colleagues, You may or may not be aware of the new Designing Accountable Software Systems (DASS) program at the National Science Foundation. Its deadline, however, is fast approaching (April 19th 2021). The DASS program aims to bring researchers in computer and information science and engineering together with researchers in law and social, behavioral, and economic sciences to jointly develop general advances in both (1) understanding the social, behavioral, economic and/or legal context of software design; and (2) improving the methodology for designing accountable software beyond specific use cases. DASS will support well-conceived collaborations between these two groups of researchers. The first group consists of researchers in software design, which, for the purposes of this solicitation, is broadly defined as formal methods, programming languages, software engineering, requirements engineering and human-centered computing. The second group consists of researchers in law and the social, behavioral, and economic sciences, who study social systems and networks, culture, social norms and beliefs, rules, canons, precedents, legal code, and routine procedures that govern the conduct of people, organizations, and countries. In response to input received, the working group for DASS at NSF has organized a virtual DASS Town Hall on Wednesday March 24th at 4:00PM Eastern Time (US and Canada). The Town Hall will provide: * a brief introduction to the DASS program * an opportunity to ask program directors questions, and * a way to meet researchers from other disciplines Please register in advance for the town hall meeting here: https://nsf.zoomgov.com/meeting/register/vJItdOmtqDosE4du3qk8Pn13VDESbwffkqQ After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. In order to facilitate the virtual meet and greet, they ask that you come prepared to share (via the chat feature) a 1-2 sentence introduction to your work relevant to DASS and a link to your website. I hope this may be of use! Best regards, -Joe Joseph Whitmeyer Program Director, SBE/SES National Science Foundation -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
