Hi Folks:

As you probably know, part of ISL’s mission is to disseminate our research findings to the community. An opportunity to do so is shown below for Westminster Oaks, our long-standing local continuing care retirement community (CCRC). Mike Rashotte is a retired faculty member from Psychology. If you think you might be able to talk in that lecture series in October, let us know.

Best, Neil

Subject: An Invitation For ISL To Speak At The Westminster Oaks Speaker Series: The Forum

Hi Neil:

The Forum speaker series at Westminster Oaks would be honored to have a speaker from the Institute For Successful Longevity on our roster in the month of October. Please consider this message as a request to see if ISL could accommodate our request and could nail down a specific date and topic.

At the moment, all Tuesday afternoons (2:00pm) in October are available for The Forum to use the Maguire Center Auditorium. I understand that some other afternoons can be explored to see availability if a Tuesday does not work for ISL. Forum sessions are scheduled for 1h, with the speaker leaving 10-15 min at the end for questions. The auditorium has AV facilities and can accommodate presentations such as Powerpoint on multiple screens. Attendance by Westminster residents seems to run about 50 people.

The Forum has offered WO residents a stimulating speaker series since 2012, hosting about 10 monthly programs each year. The stated purpose of the series is "To provide a neutral and balanced venue for thoughtful, informed issues of the day by bringing in speakers from the community". We are now recovering from abbreviated and mostly zoomed programs in the past two years. A sample of these recent programs includes presentations by Michelle Hearn (Civil Rights in the Sunshine State), Dr. Bill Applegate (The Pandemic of 1925 and the Pandemic of 2020), FSU History Professor Maxine Jones (The Rosewood Massacre), Multiple Speakers (The Arts in Tallahassee), and State Representative Allison Tant (Update On the 2021 Legislative Session). There is high interest and enthusiasm among The Forum's board to have the work of ISL included in our series for the first time.

After you and I talked a couple of weeks ago, The Forum recognizes that ISL is likely to be involved in the opening program for the new Memory Care Facility at Westminster Oaks. At this time, the date and nature of ISL's involvement in that endeavor remains uncertain, but the opening seems likely to occur in September or October. An ISL presentation at The Forum in October is now envisioned as being separate from whatever ISL will do in that important "opening" program. It is our guess that the exceptionally broad base of initiatives at ISL would provide topics for The Forum that would be of great interest and not overlap ISL's involvement in the "opening's" program. Depending on how the latter program develops, we suggest that ISL select a topic that does not overlap. As you and I discussed, a broad overview of ISL would likely provide our audience with important new information they can access through your web site and could be involved as participants in ongoing projects, or topics on a selection of specific projects would work if the overview is covered in the "opening" program. We would be pleased to have the topic for our series remain fluid until early September.

Please let me know if we can make a Tuesday date in October to have ISL participate in The Forum, and can work out a specific topic in the next few weeks as other commitments by ISL at WO are defined.

We are not able to offer a stipend for the speaker, but we do have one hell of a Forum coffee mug as a substitute!

Best regards,.
