More details below: Professor George Rebok of Johns Hopkins University to speak December 3 on cognitive training You are invited to join Professor George Rebok, Ph.D., of Johns Hopkins University for his talk on ?Preventing Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer?s Dementia: The Evidence for Cognitive Training.? Dr. Rebok?s address, at 3:30 p.m. December 3, is part of the Institute for Successful Longevity?s Speaker Series. Each fall and spring semester, the institute brings in an expert on aging to talk about their work and to discuss trends in longevity research. Dr. Rebok?s address will be virtual, via the Zoom platform. For a link to the Zoom event, please send an email to ISL at fsu.edu. If you have never used Zoom, the Institute for Successful Longevity has put together guides that show you how to set up a Zoom account and join a meeting. You can read or download the Zoom guides at ISL Zoom Guides. Since joining the Johns Hopkins University faculty in 1989, Rebok has pursued research in two interrelated areas: 1) the design and implementation of preventive trials targeted at childhood antecedents of adolescent and adult psychopathology, including depression, early achievement problems, and poor concentration, and 2) the neurocognitive predictors of functional abilities and decline in demented and nondemented older adults and their modifiability through interactive cognitive interventions. His two research streams converge around a common focus on attentional and cognitive parameters of maladaptive behavior, plasticity of functioning, perceived competence or self-efficacy as a variable linking physiological, psychological, and social function, and short- and long-term outcomes of preventive intervention and treatment. We hope to see you all there and please add the Zoom link to your calendars if you can attend! Earlier this year I emailed about upcoming changes to the NIH BioSketch and Other Support documents, the official release of the changes will occur sometime this month and the implementation is January 2021. I'll forward the official notification and SRA will also distribute. Changes include, but not a complete list or fully described: 1. BioSketch * Section B will include all scientific appointments (foreign and domestic). * Section D is removed for research focused biosketches and remains with a slightly different focus for fellowship biosketches. * The 5 page limit is still intact. * SciENcv will integrate in late 2021 2. Other Support: "Includes all resources made available to researcher or senior key personnel in support of and/or related to all of their research endeavors, regardless of whether or not they have monetary value and regardless of whether they are based at the institution the researcher identifies for the current grant. Other support does not include training awards, prizes, gifts or start-up support from the US based institution". "This includes resource and/or financial support from all foreign and domestic entities, including but not limited to, financial support for laboratory personnel, and provision of high-value materials that are not freely available (e.g., biologics, chemical, model systems, technology, etc.)". * Consultant arrangements are not usually included. * Does not include "start up". * Includes total direct and indirect amounts. Sandell Grant Program Neil, Good morning. The Center for Retirement Research sponsors the annual Steven H. Sandell Grant Program for scholars in the field of retirement or disability research and policy. The program is funded by the U.S. Social Security Administration to provide opportunities for junior or non-tenured scholars (within seven years of receiving their Ph.D.) from all academic disciplines to pursue cutting-edge projects on retirement or disability issues. Research focal areas include: * Trends in disability; * Determining disability; * Requirements of work in the modern economy; * Informing long-term projections and models; * Improving communication and outreach; * State and local pensions for non-covered workers; * Modernizing totalization agreements; * Economic security of SSA beneficiaries; * Work-activity retention of disabled beneficiaries with overpayments; and * Improving service delivery. Grant Awards Up to three $45,000 grants are awarded based upon the quality of the applicant's proposal and the proposed budget. Applicants are required to complete the research outlined in the proposal within one year of the award. Grant recipients may be required to present their work to the Social Security Administration in Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD. "Virtual Office Hours" Service The CRR offers the opportunity for potential applicants to ask questions about topics, datasets, and research design. Message-ID: Hi folks, This was discussed briefly in our last Affiliates meeting, but we are looking at hosting a virtual Student Poster Day event in the spring. So far, the date that appears to work best for everyone via a poll taken was March 5th from 2-5pm EST. Is this a date that still works for everyone, and also, if you have students that would be interested in presenting at the event, to please send me an email to my email address listed below so I can add their names to a list of presenters, that way we can get a good idea of how many students are expected to present.
