This summer, Florida State University is participating in the Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA). The TFLA program is sponsored by the City of Tallahassee, which partners with area organizations to provide summer jobs for local youth (ages 15-19). The program provides community youth with work experience, professional development, and mentorship. We encourage you to watch the employer and youth testimonials to learn more about their experiences. Details The program runs from June 5-July 28 and entails: * Eight weeks of employment with an FSU department at a maximum of 20 hours per week. Wages are centrally funded at no cost to the participating department. * Skills development through on-the-job experience and program seminars focused on personal growth, professional development, and financial literacy. * Mentorship from a caring department manager that focuses on improving interpersonal skills and enhancing self-confidence and self-esteem. The University funds TFLA student salaries at no cost to the participating department! Get Involved We are looking for departments to host a TFLA student. If your department is interested, please email a brief statement of interest to the contact listed below outlining: * Your department's interest in hosting a TFLA student. * The nature of the job you will provide. Note: you must have availability to host from June 5 to July 28 for a maximum of 20 hours per week. * The anticipated learning outcomes related to leadership and professional development from your position. * Contact information of someone who will serve as the student's supervisor. Important Reminders for Supervisors TFLA is a mentorship employment program. TFLA students are not eligible for remote work. By hosting a student, you are committing to being physically present to provide supervision and mentorship. * Student availability may not always line up with a hybrid work schedule. This may mean you have to adjust your remote schedule during the program. As we near the start of the summer semester, we have important reminders to share regarding Graduate Assistant appointments. Graduate students who are not taking a full-time course load during the summer semester cannot work in a Graduate Assistant (GA) appointment during the summer semester. If the student is working and the appointment does not meet the criteria for an assistantship, the department should initiate an OPS appointment through OPS Express. The unused Graduate Assistant records should be put on a summer Leave of Absence (LOA). The record can remain active for reappointment in the fall semester. The summer LOA process alleviates the requirement for departments to terminate GA appointment records that are unfunded during the summer but will be reappointed for the fall. A graduate assistant record can be put on a summer LOA if the employee: * Will not be taking a full-time course load over the summer, * Will be working in an OPS job code on another record, and * Will be returning to the primary GA appointment for the fall semester. Graduate Assistants not working over the summer semester in another OPS appointment do not need to follow the summer LOA process. The GA record can be left unfunded for the summer and reappointed for the fall semester through the Fall Mass Appointments process. What's New This Year? * The deadline for departments to submit all summer T-code OPS appointments with a GA LOA pPAF is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023. * EDM will manually terminate the T-code OPS appointment from the funding dates provided on the GA Summer LOA pPAF. * Graduate Assistants utilizing a summer LOA should be reappointed via the Fall Mass Appointments process.
