Tracking has been historically used to restrict minority access to rigorous mathematical education. Is tracking inherently evil? I don't believe so, nor do I think that was the point of the article. I believe the anecdote between the author and his guidance counselor illustrate the importance of seeking student (and family) input on the student's education goals. But student's are instead tracked predominantly based upon test scores, which are biased.
