<div class="ms-outlook-mobile-reference-message skipProofing">Thunderstorm hazards remain impactful throughout the world. At the global scale, lightning, hail, severe wind gusts, tornadoes, and flash flooding kill thousands of people and cost tens of billions
 of dollars annually (Munich Re). While forecasts have improved, the increasing vulnerability of human development and infrastructure compels researchers and forecasters to work together to mitigate the impacts of convective hazards.</div>

<div class="ms-outlook-mobile-reference-message skipProofing">The realm of nowcasting (0-6 hours) is where life-and-death decisions are made. Information-rich remotely sensed observations (e.g., satellite, radar) along with modern AI/ML hardware and APIs have
 enabled breakthroughs in short-term forecasting. To optimize the value of these resources, I propose three items: 1) Data curation and data-sharing practices must be robust and sustainable, with equal considerations for operational and research purposes, 2)
 End-users or customers should be included in the research-to-operations process, with frequent opportunities for feedback, and 3) Verification of forecast products does not end after a transfer to operations—verification is the means to new scientific insight.</div>
