Description: Cyclonic meanders in the western Yucatan Channel drive strong upwelling, isopycnal heave, and irreversible mixing that produces water with Yucatan Gulf Common Water (YGCW) characteristics, and frontal eddies propagating along the Loop Current western
flank have been implicated in Loop Current detachment. The mechanism that triggers these meanders, however, remains poorly constrained. Here we combine moored velocity and hydrographic observations from the Canek array, satellite altimetry, and a free-running
NEMO 1/36° and 1/108° simulations to characterize the meanders and diagnose their origin. The events are recurrent rather than isolated, and each follows a consistent sequence. Large anticyclones in the northwest Caribbean are persistently present before and
during meander growth, and their arrival coincides with increased curvature and horizontal strain in the Yucatan Current. Barotropic conversion terms indicate energy transfer from the mean horizontal shear to the perturbation field during these events, while
the Ertel potential vorticity budget points to the Campeche Bank slope as the source of the cyclonic anomaly, consistent with current–topography interaction. Lagrangian diagnostics show that interaction between coherent Caribbean eddies and the Yucatan Current
precedes local frontal-eddy formation. The resulting frontal eddies carry recently formed YGCW into the northeastern Gulf along the Loop Current edge, linking boundary-current meandering to water-mass transformation and export.</div>
