<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:black">Tropical cyclone (TC) intensification has long been attributed to air-sea interaction, where enhanced ocean-to-atmosphere heat fluxes strengthen atmospheric circulation. Radiative feedbacks have
gained renewed attention in recent years as a complimentary mechanism for TC development, where spatial co-variability in radiative heating and moist static energy enhance deep convection, the overturning circulation, and angular momentum convergence. This
study presents a comprehensive observational analysis of radiative and surface enthalpy flux feedbacks in TCs, combining dropsonde wind speed and thermodynamic profiles from upper-level reconnaissance aircraft missions into North Atlantic TCs from 2000-2021
with hourly satellite longwave and shortwave radiative flux retrievals. Radiative and surface flux feedbacks are computed using the budget equation for the spatial variance of column-integrated moist static energy. The longwave feedback decreases with increasing
distance from the TC center, is more strongly positive in more intense TCs, and is positively correlated with TC intensification rate when normalized by column moist static energy variance. The shortwave feedback is negative closer to the TC center and more
negative in stronger TCs, but weaker than the longwave feedback. CMSE and the longwave feedback potentially follow a diurnal cycle such that both are stronger in the morning and weaker in the afternoon and evening. Longwave feedbacks are comparable in magnitude
to surface flux feedbacks in weaker TCs, but are only one-third to one-fourth their magnitude in more intense TCs, corroborating recent modeling studies. These results highlight that radiation plays a substantial role in TC intensification, alongside surface
flux-related processes.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
