From jhclark at fsu.edu Thu Jan 6 09:41:45 2022 From: jhclark at fsu.edu (Jessica Clark) Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2022 14:41:45 +0000 Subject: [Discipuli] (Classics) Welcome back! Message-ID: Hi all -- and happy New Year (trivia fact: New Years Day was first observed January 1 in 153 BC, when the Roman Republic shifted the start of the political year from March to January; that's why the Latin roots of September, October, November, and December correspond to 7/8/9/10 rather than, as number them, 9/10/11/12). If you're planning to graduate in Spring 2022, be sure to register for graduation between January 12-28 (via your course Quicklinks on https://my.fsu.edu). You'll receive more emails about this! If you'd like to meet with me (jhclark at fsu.edu) or Chris O'Neal (coneal at fsu.edu) about advising or other matters, don't hesitate to reach out. We can set up a Zoom appointment Mondays/Tuesdays 10:00-2:00. Best wishes for the new semester, Prof. Clark Jessica H. If you are willing to volunteer your tutoring services, just let me know your time slot and preferred mode (in person, Zoom, or both). Many thanks to all of you who volunteered last semester. Your generosity is part of what makes Classics at FSU a great community. All best, Dr. Luke *Qualified means that you have completed the Beginning Latin sequence through the third semester and have a B average in that same sequence. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Elsie Phare Fellowship is endowed by Classical Studies Professor Emily Wilson and was established in 2021. Wilson named the fund after her grandmother, Elsie Phare, who would have been unable to attend college without the generous financial help of a scholarship. The Masciantonio Fellowship honors Dr. Rudolph Masciantonio, who earned his master?s degree in classical studies from Penn and made a significant impact by bringing Latin and Greek instruction to students from underserved populations in Philadelphia school districts before he retired in 1994. We particularly invite applications from students belonging to underrepresented minority groups. This includes students from racial and ethnic groups that are underrepresented in fields relating to the study of the ancient world, individuals from low-income households, and first-generation college students. Penn?s Post-Baccalaureate Program in Classical Studies has been in existence since 1984 and prepares students for graduate-level studies in classical studies, archaeology, ancient history, and related fields. Penn's extraordinary resources include a leading classical studies department with world-class faculty, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books, and Manuscripts. The application deadline for the 2022 Classical Studies post-baccalaureate program is April 15, 2022, with rolling admissions thereafter. The application deadline for both fellowships is April 15, 2022. I encourage you to share this exciting news with your talented and driven students! The Department of Classics is currently seeking to hire a new professor of Greek poetry, and we'll be (Zoom) hosting four candidates over the next few weeks. You're all invited to attend their teaching demonstrations and then (if you wish) provide feedback on the experience. The first demonstration will be Michele Asuni, who is currently completing his PhD at Johns Hopkins University (2022). He will be teaching a sample Greek mythology class (probable topics either Eros or Medea) Tuesday, 2/1, 3:00-4:00 pm: https://fsu.zoom.us/j/91639899140 The second demonstration will be Dr. Alyson Melzer, who received her PhD from Stanford (2020). She will also be teaching a sample mythology class, Friday 2/4, 2:00-3:00 pm. (If it's a different Zoom link, I'll send it when I have it). You are all most welcome to attend any or all of the demos, and I'll send more information about the other two candidates' visits when I have it to share. Best wishes and have a lovely weekend, Prof. Clark APPLY FOR SPRING 2022 GRADUATION If you intend to graduate in the Spring 2022 semester, the Spring 2022 Graduation Application window is now open and will remain open through 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28.
