Welcome back to class. I am the president (Prytanis) of the Eta Chapter of the Eta Sigma Phi Classics Honor Society and Club here at FSU. We are the 7th oldest chapter of an integral undergraduate community that engages in an appreciation for all things classics. In the past, we have met for fun events like trivia, Certamen (classics quiz bowl), movie nights, professional development workshops, and the Eta Sigma Phi national conference. If you are studying Latin or Greek, you must have earned a B or higher in one semester of Latin or Greek in order to receive an invitation for our national membership. If you earned a B or higher in spring 2021 or summer 2021, you will be receiving an invitation in the next month for our induction ceremony! Please RSVP for this invitation when you receive it. We are devoted to allowing students of all backgrounds who loves the classics to join our community, which is why we have a new Associate Membership option for students who do not take Latin or Greek but took it in high school or just really enjoy other aspects of the classics, such as mythology, history, literature, or media. This will just be a one time fee of $10 and you receive a certificate of membership, you will be free to join all meetings and events. Graduate students are also open to this membership, so spread the word! The link to the associate membership form is here: https://forms.gle/Me6GVhdNfXXDQ3s48 The application closes at the end of September so apply today. If you are not sure what membership you are eligible for, you can fill out our interest form here: https://forms.gle/eJ4WHiQC8NKCZp6s6 Our first meeting will be September 8th at 7 PM, likely on Landis, but we will send out more details later. All are welcome. We'll have faculty introductions, an overview of department events and clubs, a chance to chat informally, and individually-packaged refreshments for you to take away with you. In the event of light rain, we will have handouts and snacks, and a shorter round of introductions, in the covered area adjacent to Dodd Hall Auditorium (if truly inclement weather, we will hold the event over Zoom, with a notification coming through these same email lists). We are delighted to hold this event in person, but ask you to respect the University's expectations for masking and social distancing, and to act to promote one another's safety and to acknowledge individual needs (and preferences) with regard to mitigating the transmission of COVID-19. I'm looking forward to seeing -- or meeting -- you, and encourage you to get in touch with me (jhclark at fsu.edu) if you have any questions!
