We seek to promote education regarding five aspects of health: physical, clinical, mental, financial, and sexual health. Each aspect will have either FSU or local community professionals that will provide activities such as interactive games, screenings, health and wellness classes, CPR training and more! Event participants will have the opportunity to get a t-shirt, gift card, and free food! History: At the FSU Health Day event of 2018, we partnered with 12 organizations, broke the world record for heart screenings on a college campus and provided health education to over 533 people. With the help of SGA, we were able to raise over $6,000 for EKGs, supplies, tents, and nutritious meals. Our goal has doubled in size for the October 17th, 2022 event. Mission: Our mission is to support the health and wellness of our own FSU community by gathering campus and community resources that can help students prioritize healthcare affordably, impacting their future medical decisions and outcomes., Amongst our wellness goals, we look to promote sexual safety and awareness for students, as Leon County is Number 1 in the State of Florida for sexually transmitted infections, including Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Furthermore, we aim to exceed the number of EKG screens that were accomplished in 2018, checking for any asymptomatic heart condition that can lead to further harm. By providing entertaining and comprehensive health education to the center of campus, we hope to start many conversations that extend beyond campus and the 4 years students spend here. What to Expect: This event will offer screenings such as blood pressure readings, conducted by the College of Nursing, and HIV testing, conducted by Neighborhood Medical Center. If an individual receives a positive result, such as a high blood pressure or the HIV-Ab is found, the Florida Health Department or an alternative health care professional at the event will be notified and the individual will be referred to follow-up with their primary care physician or University Health Services for further information. All participants will be required to sign a consent form before participating in the free event. We will have local physicians, EKG screenings, basic anatomy discussions, birth control wheels, jeopardy games and more. Spend 5 minutes at 5 of our booths and gain a free gift card, t-shirt or meal! Dr. Taryn Wade Friday, Oct. 21 1:00 - 2:00 PM EST Zoom Join us for our School of Teacher Education Colloquium featuring Dr. Taryn Wade! Abstract: This study examined the effect of a shared reading routine on the social emotional vocabulary knowledge of four preschool children. Incorporating interactive questioning techniques and explicit definitions can support children?s language development. A dialogic reading framework was used with the PEER scaffolding steps and selected question prompts (i.e., inference-based) with multiple exposures to the target words. This study utilized a single-case, multiple probe across word sets (i.e., tiers) and intervention sessions were delivered one-on-one with each participant. Child responses were measured during instruction and full probes were administered in baseline and before moving on to the next word set. Visual analysis was used to determine if functional relationships were demonstrated for participants. Implications for practice are discussed. Her research primarily focuses on how race, class, and gender intersect and impact educational equity in urban schooling contexts. She locates her research within two theoretical frameworks: Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Black feminist theories. Dr. Dixson and her colleague, Celia K. Rousseau-Anderson, edited CRT in Education: All God's Children Got a Song (2006, Routledge), which was one of the first book-length texts on CRT in education. She is also a co-editor with Marvin Lynn, of the Handbook of Critical Race Theory and Education. Most recently, Dr. Dixson has been interested in how educational equity is mediated by school reform policies in the urban south. Specifically, she is interested in school reform in post-Katrina New Orleans, how local actors make sense of and experience those reform policies, and how those policies become, or are "racialized." Her research has been funded by the Spencer Foundation, the Kellogg Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Dixson is the recipient of multiple awards and honors for her research on CRT. In 2021, she was inducted as a Fellow in the American Educational Research Association. For the 2022-2023 school year, Dr. Dixson will be on leave from the University of Kentucky to serve as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation in the Racial Equity Program Description and the NSF INCLUDES Program. ? Copeland St. The School of Theatre at Florida State University presents The Ruby Sunrise at the Lab Theatre Oct. 28-Nov. 6. Written by Rinne Groff, this play is a glowing dramedy about the women behind television. During the 1920s at a barn in Indiana among the fireflies, a tomboy named Ruby electrifies her new invention: the television. At a New York film studio in the 1950s, a screenwriter named Lulu challenges studio executives to take a stand. During the dawn and golden age of television, both women defy convention and broadcast hard questions about the ways people make and tell history. The Ruby Sunrise is a re-imagining of television's birth and adolescence inspired by some real-world figures and enlivened by double-casting. Ruby is a self-taught 1920s tinkerer like real-life prodigy Philo Farnsworth; her daughter Lulu is a "script girl" who faces down sexism and McCarthyism not unlike Vera Caspary (writer of the classic noir Laura) or Lillian Hellman (The Little Foxes starring Bette Davis). A 2004 Humana Festival pick that made its 2005 premiere at the Public Theater in New York City, The Ruby Sunrise has featured performers such as Elizabeth Moss, Marin Ireland, and Henry Winkler during its production history. The SciComm Identities Project (SCIP) aims to shift the paradigm of science communication training and create a more representative suite of academic science communicators through a new fellowship designed to test a training curriculum based on intercultural communication theories. The SCIP Fellowship is a one-year professional development opportunity for pre-tenure faculty at U.S. institutions who identify as underrepresented racial or ethnic minorities. The project, supported by a $2.8 million collaborative National Science Foundation grant, will address a significant gap in science communication research and training by centering the motivations, experiences, and priorities of racial and ethnic minority scientists.
