As we begin the fall semester, I want to welcome our new students, faculty and staff to Florida State University, and welcome back all of those who are returning to campus. I?m new to Florida State University myself and have been enjoying touring campus and getting to know many of you. When I first visited campus this past spring, I immediately noticed how often people referred to Florida State University as a family. I?ve only officially been on the job a little more than a week, and already I can see that it?s true. This is a special place, and I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome you have extended to my wife, Jai, and me. You know your lesson has resonated with them and the nods confirm their comprehension. These moments are powerful to see in students, but they?re equally as powerful to see among teachers. Dr? Graham, 2020 Florida teacher of the year and doctoral student in FSU?s learning design and performance technology program, was able to experience this firsthand. Graham served as the emcee at this year?s Florida Teacher of the Year Roundtable, a week-long event that culminates in the Florida Teacher of the Year Gala. All district teachers of the year, former statewide winners, Florida Department of Education staff and sponsors attend the annual event. Bobby Bowden, former head football coach at Florida State University, is a shining example of how just one person can inspire countless others. ?When you really think about it, there are only a handful of coaches that have had as far-reaching of an impact as Coach Bowden,? said Megan Buning, teaching faculty in FSU?s Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching (FSU COACH) and former FSU softball coach. ?He inspires not only football athletes and coaches to this day, but coaches of different sports, retired coaches and non-coaches.? Through the partnership, FSU students in the special education program and autism spectrum disorder master?s and certificate programs worked with attendees of the Adult Community Education (ACE) Summer Institute. They conducted assessments and teaching lessons both in-person and virtually, getting real-world experience before running a classroom or business of their own. I chose FSU COE for the Athletic Coaching master's program because of the goal conveyed to prepare people to be coaches. There are so many aspects of coaching beyond a sport itself, and it?s great to be involved in a program that is taking steps for people to understand what is truly involved in coaching. ? Both of the classes that I have taken have challenged me to critically think through situations that could come up in my coaching career. Having the knowledge and application of case studies from these classes have made me consider what I say, what I do, and how I react. After graduation, I plan on continuing my coaching career. My desire is to teach coaching classes so that others can pass along knowledge to other generations, and not just skills about a specific sport but values for excellence and integrity.
