I earned my B.A. in English at FSU in 2001, and as someone who grew up in the Florida Panhandle, I always considered Florida State home. As an educational developer working in higher education, I wanted to be better positioned to work with instructional design and online learning, so I began one of the graduate certificates offered by the ISLT program in 2017. While in the certificate program, I learned about the online Ed.D. program in Learning Design and Performance Technology. I had been looking into doctoral programs for years, but as a practitioner who was trying to understand how to best conduct and apply educational research, one of my highest priorities was working with faculty who were not only research leaders in the field, but were also known for their dedication to supporting students. I found just that in FSU?s ISLT program. Nearly every aspect of my life has been enriched since becoming part of the ISLT family, and it is easily one of the best decisions I have ever made. My primary area of research is in how we can create inclusive and equitable spaces for students in online learning environments. Specifically, my research is focused on LGBTQ+ students, a group that has, historically, been especially reliant upon the creation of supportive networks and safe spaces both on and off university campuses. After graduation, my goal is to move into an academic leadership position at a university committed to the continuous improvement of online teaching and learning, especially for their most vulnerable populations. I often joke now that the reason I had not started my doctorate sooner was because I was simply waiting for the perfect program to be created. And that is exactly what I have found here at FSU. We will explore the dynamics and practices characterizing disciplinary engagement in science, drawing on studies of professional scientists and of learners engaged in inquiry. Some of the questions that we will explore in this course include: What does doing science look like for scientists and for learners? What epistemic practices are characteristic of scientific engagement, and how have they been conceptualized and studied in science education? What do the beginnings of science look like in children?s thinking? How do various affective, social, linguistic, and identity dynamics play out in the doing of science? What do these dynamics entail for the design of learning environments and for assessment? The processing for each is slightly different but a main point to keep in mind is that glaze is food safe while acrylic paint is not. Whichever you choose, the process is super easy: Glaze - purchase in person, bring your piece home, paint it, and bring it back in so we can add a clear coat and fire it.
