Whether you read for pleasure, for growth or for learning (or some combination of the three), reading is a great habit. It?s been shown to increase your brain?s functionality, your ability to empathize and even reduce your stress levels. We asked our faculty and staff members for some of their favorite books they?ve read this past year. While not all of these books were published recently, each left a lasting impression. As I grew up and gained new experiences, my interest in teaching only grew, as did my interests in reading and writing. Throughout the years, I have often found myself helping my peers and children with academics mostly related to English; it could be anything from helping revise an essay to working on reading comprehension tasks. By the time I was ready to start the college search, I knew that English Education would be the best fit for me. My choice to come to Florida State University was not quite as streamlined. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and originally began looking at schools all across the Midwest. When my family decided to move to Florida after my senior year, my plans quickly changed. After a whirlwind week of touring multiple colleges in Florida, I found myself standing on the Florida State campus. Immediately, the brick buildings and giant oak and pine trees made it feel like home. Learning about the cohort model for education majors, accelerated bachelor's/master's program, and the multitude of opportunities to get experience in the field only made the decision to come to Florida State easier. Now, Florida State has become a second home to me, and I can't thank my English Education cohort, Dr. Tenore, and the organizations I've joined (specifically Camp Kesem) enough for encouraging and supporting me. While I don't know the specifics of what I'll do after graduation, I can't wait to teach English at a school somewhere in South Florida. I look forward to the day I have a classroom and students of my own. Have news to share? ?We'd love to hear from you! The virtual symposium will take place over three weekends, beginning with more introductory concurrent workshops and building to a more advanced-level appeal in the third week. Each workshop block will feature a series of concurrent sessions, covering topics including anti-racism, interfaith inclusion, anti-sexism, transgender inclusion, anti-heterosexism, anti-classism, anti-xenophobia, and anti-ableism. Participants can join in the symposium at will. The only attendance expectation is that workshop attendees participate in the small group block immediately following each workshop block they attend. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Got an event you'd like to promote to your fellow COE students? The combined program was appealing for three reasons: the exposure to both practice areas of school psychology and counseling psychology, the variety of practicum experiences, and the opportunity to gain expertise within my research and clinical interests. About the Combined Counseling Psychology and School Psychology Program The combined counseling psychology and school psychology program embraces a scientist-practitioner model of training for health service psychology. The combined training program endorses a generalist and integrative framework for the education and training of doctoral students. Emphasis is on the development of professional practice skills, attitudes, and competencies that are consistent with the specialties of counseling psychology and school psychology. What distinguishes us from other counseling psychology programs is that we are one of only three APA-accredited programs offering a combined counseling psychology and school psychology program.
