Vision problems in the United States continue to rise, with a projected doubling of visual conditions in this country from nearly 8 million affected individuals to greater than 16 million individuals by 2050. Without implementing strategies to ameliorate their quality of life through access to rehabilitation and medical intervention, individuals, their families, their communities, and all of society will be impacted negatively. This event will take place online via Zoom. Click here to register. COE Student Spotlight [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/69b114f0-8e13-45f5-96fb-4c5781b93e4e.jpg] Name: Alex Moran Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Major: Education Policy and Evaluation (Ph.D.) I chose FSU because of the alignment between my research interests and the research conducted by my now-advisor, Dr. Motoko Akiba. I felt as though I would be able to work closely with her and build a positive mentor-mentee relationship that I didn?t feel with many faculty-members at other schools. My favorite part about the Education Policy and Evaluation program so far has been the faculty. Every faculty member has been so supportive and kind in their interactions with students and they seem like they really want the students to succeed beyond just passing a class. I am interested in how school districts provide support for teacher professional learning. Specifically, I am looking at the different conditions across Florida school districts that either support or hinder the role of the literacy coach. I am also interested in higher education and labor market returns to underrepresented students in response to the Next Generation Science Standards. After I graduate, I would like to stay in research. I am really enjoying the process of doing research and interacting with the ?puzzles? that it gives to me. I think I am leaning towards an academic pathway, but non-academic routes, such as think-tanks or research institutes, interest me, as well. At the end of the day, I will go down whichever pathway hires me! Have news to share? ?We'd love to hear from you! You will learn the practical and theoretical application of institutional research, and you will learn how it is applied throughout universities. P.S.: This course is online, and all of the readings are online and free. [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/7e200db8-6906-4ff7-8063-3aa74f2d1acd.png] [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/eaaa5f71-4635-4527-9a7d-3d0e1e0a8994.png] Two excellent higher education courses are being offered for this upcoming Spring semester. EDH 5639: Management in Higher Education - Leadership and management are core, fundamental skills for professionals in higher education. Throughout Management in Higher Education, you will master management tools, group coordination, and decision-making techniques. You'll also learn skills that help you to implement positive change in higher-education organizations. P.S.: This course is online and asynchronous. EDH 6040: Research on College Students - Researching college students is a win-win for everyone involved. They get extra credit, and researchers get access to a massive pool of participants to work with. That said, it doesn't come without its challenges. In Research on College Students, not only will you learn to understand the best practices for performing research on college students, but you'll learn how to handle the most common issues that you may see when performing research on college students. There are theoretical, practical, and (most critically) methodological challenges that come with researching college students. You'll look at how these challenges have influenced past studies (for better and for worse), and you'll learn how to anticipate them and handle them successfully. Most importantly, you'll learn how to apply this knowledge to your own research projects. This is a great course to look at if you expect to be doing research on college students in the future. Spring 2022 Course Spotlights [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/ec44ee68-36d4-4323-b591-90a71ca2ffb0.png] Want to improve your understanding of knowing & learning science? Looking to develop your teaching practice to become a more effective science instructor? Seeking to develop a deeper understanding of how best to approach your own science learning experiences? If you answer ?yes? to any of these questions, then this course is for you! In Science Teaching and Learning, you will be provided with the opportunity to examine theories of learning and properly incorporate those theories into your own instruction and/or research. This course is not simply a survey of theories of knowing and learning in science. Instead, the course is posited on the notion that any teaching practice is guided by some theory of how people learn. SCE 5340: Science Teaching and Learning is available for Spring 2022 registration. The course is online and requires no prerequisites. Please reach out to instructor Lama Jaber at ljaber at fsu.edu with any questions! You will learn the practical and theoretical application of institutional research, and you will learn how it is applied throughout universities. P.S.: This course is online, and all of the readings are online and free. You'll also learn how to evaluate the quality of machine learning forecasts. This course will be taught in the programming language R, but if you know a different programming language, such as Python, you are more than welcome to use it for the course. In Fall: EDF 5485: Missing Data Analysis - In this course, you will learn how to handle problems with missing data through the use of single and multiple imputation methods. You will also learn about Bayesian statistics and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Dr. Russell Almond at ralmond at fsu.edu. PS: Both courses require a background in statistics equivalent to having taken a regression course (EDF 5401: Generalized Linear Models or something equivalent).
