I chose the Higher Education program at FSU because during Visiting Days, I could tell that the interactions from FSU faculty and staff were genuine. From interviews to casual conversations, I sensed that they truly wanted to know about me and my interests. At times, faculty and staff even approached me first, easing any hesitancy of a prospective student initiating dialogue with such successful individuals at a prestigious university. I felt like I would be supported at FSU, and that feeling became a reality when I enrolled in the Higher Education program. My favorite part about the program is how easy it is to converse with faculty. You can schedule a meeting with them and talk about research, careers, etc. Not only will the professors speak about their own experiences, but they will also ask the student about their goals and ambitions. Then, they will find ways to support that student, even if it was only the first interaction. I am grateful for this a supportive environment as I complete my master?s degree and begin my career in student affairs. After graduation this spring, I aim to work as a student affairs practitioner at a college or university. Then, I aspire to enroll in a doctoral program in Higher Education after receiving professional experience. Have news to share? ?We'd love to hear from you! The Native American and Indigenous Studies Ad Hoc Committee was formed in the spring of 2021 to explicitly address the need for increased presence, prevalence, and resources for Indigenous scholars, scholarship, and allies at research universities, with the eventual aim of establishing a formal Native American and Indigenous Studies program here at Florida State University. This roundtable and meet-up is the first step on this journey by providing an interdisciplinary networking opportunity for all FSU and FAMU faculty, students, and staff who are conducting/are interested in scholarship in collaboration with Indigenous peoples or who are Indigenous/Native scholars to raise awareness and facilitate capacity-building. After an introduction to the aims of this committee, members and any other interested researchers (graduate students welcome!) will present short (2-3 minute) summaries of their scholarship. After this, the table will be opened to the whole community for questions and discussion.
