When I was looking into different universities in Florida, I was captured by the history and beauty of Florida State. Once I learned that FSU was the only university in Florida that offered a program based on visual disabilities education, I knew it was the school for me. I decided to enroll in the Visual Disabilities Education program after learning about the career of a teacher for students with visual impairments (TVI). I enjoyed knowing that I could teach a student reading and writing braille, making a sandwich, or even tying a shoelace. I greatly appreciate the dynamic between the professors and students. The professors always have their doors open for us whenever we have questions regarding our assignments or lectures from class. The level of support and guidance provided by my professors displays that they care about how successful we will be as teachers once we leave. Dr. Lewis and Dr. Bischof provide my peers and me multiple valuable practicum experiences that allow us to practice and strengthen our skill set as TVIs before we enter the field. After graduation, I plan on working as a teacher for students with visual impairments in South Florida. Have news to share? ?We'd love to hear from you! Teachers of color make up 18% of classroom teachers, while 80% are White (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2019). AACTE's Black and Hispanic/Latino Male Teacher Networked Improvement Community Report (2019) suggests, "increasing the number of teachers of color in schools provides students of color with role models, offers opportunities to culturally connect, sets high expectations, and reduces implicit bias" (p3). In the state of Florida, 32% of teachers are from an underrepresented group, while 68% are White (FL Department of Education, 2019). Moreover, 63% of Florida's K-12 school population are students of color and only 37% are White (FL Department of Education, 2019). Similar to other teacher preparation programs at PWI's, FSU's School of Teacher Education combined bachelor's/master's teacher preparation program has struggled to recruit and retain students of color. Only 28% of students enrolled in one of the School of Teacher Education's combined BS/MS teacher preparation programs identify as Black or Hispanic. This presentation will identify research-based strategies to recruit, retain and advise students of color within teacher preparation programs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Got an event you'd like to promote to your fellow COE students? The films presented in this series emphasize Indigenous narratives that navigate through centuries of colonial erasure of cultural practices, and efforts to force assimilation into dominant settler colonial society. Some may question their identity due to centuries of genocide and violent assimilation, but the act of picking up a camera and taking back the screen is an assertion of Indigenous sovereignty in the 21st century. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/4016e031-4aec-4a43-b8d1-6ea28185285b.jpg] Relevant Research Roundtable with Dr. Kakali Bhattacharya presents "Human Inquiry Is Not Free from Human Influence: Positionality Matters" Wednesday, Nov. 18 1:30 - 2:30 PM Online The Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies at the FSU College of Education welcomes Dr. Kakali Bhattacharya, who will be presenting a talk titled "Human Inquiry Is Not Free From Human Influence: Positionality Matters." Teachers of color make up 18% of classroom teachers, while 80% are White (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2019). This year, the COE Student Leadership Council has chosen Woodville Pre-K-8th School, a Title I school in Leon County, as our recipient school. All faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the College of Education are invited to contribute and help out classrooms in need in our local community. With the holidays fast approaching, we are working hard to get these supplies to the school before the winter break. Due to the current pandemic and the extra safety measures that teachers are taking to keep their classrooms safe, this wish list may look a little different than a typical list of school supplies. All items can be purchased directly through the Amazon wish list at the link below. Additionally, when checking out, please be sure to select the address containing "ATTN: Jeanette Villa" for delivery. Ms. Villa is our contact at Woodville School and will be collecting the items on behalf of all teachers. View the full wish list on Amazon at bit.ly/woodville-supplies. You can also share the attached flyer with your network to spread the word!
