I chose the field of clinical mental health counseling because I have both a passion for learning about the many various aspects of the field of mental health, as well as a desire to help others recognize their capability for growth and change. I was first drawn to FSU's Clinical Mental Health program because of their CACREP accreditation. As someone who plans to pursue licensure post graduation, going into a program that is CACREP accredited is basically the gold standard for obtaining licensure in the future. Additionally, I really loved that FSU's program emphasizes the importance of clinical experience. As students, we are expected to begin our clinical experience through a practicum and internship starting in the second semester of the program. I love the hands-on experience this program offers. Lastly, as a Tallahassee native and someone who plans to stick around after graduation, I love that I get the opportunity to work directly within the community that I plan to continue to work with post graduation. After I complete the program, I plan on pursuing licensure in Florida. My hope is to one day work at a facility like Florida State Hospital and work directly with inpatient populations; however, I am completely open to pursuing another path if that is where my experiences in this program lead me! We are glad you are continuing your graduate studies with us from Tallahassee or various places around the county and world! As you know, Fall 2020 semester is being delivered primarily via remote instruction. In the COE, we have very few face to face classes. Due to this, the majority of staff and faculty in the COE are working remotely. We want to ensure that you receive the support you need, so I am including a few websites and documents to assist. The COE Faculty and Staff directory can be found at under the Current Students dropdown menu of our website. Here you can find the contact information for everyone in the College! Attached you will find a Word document that outlines the College?s departments, degrees, and majors. It also includes each department?s chair, manager, faculty program coordinators, and staff. Find your major in this document and you will be able to see your department, department chair, faculty program coordinator and department staff contacts! OASIS (Office of Academic Services and Intern Supports) is also a resource at the College level. While they do not advise graduate students about which classes to take or register students for classes, they are a central office that can assist you or point you in the right direction! More information can be found in the attached PDF titled OASIS Graduate Contact Information. Their website is incredibly helpful and provides a wealth of information. https://education.fsu.edu/student-resources/student-academic-services-oasis/for-graduate-students The College provides helpful planning documents based on your degree level! The report was funded by the FSU Office of Research and aims to summarize the state of Florida and its response and status of its Black population during the summer months. Student Spotlight: Charlotte Hayes [https://files.constantcontact.com/a4906c54201/201146b6-2148-41ca-a81b-a9d65a45489a.jpg] Name: Charlotte Hayes Hometown: Alexandria, VA Program: Higher Education (M.S.) The FSU Higher Ed program was recommended to me by a mentor. I was unsure if I wanted to go to grad school in Florida (the heat and humidity initially sounded less than ideal), but I figured I would try applying and see what happened. Once I got to campus for my program's Visiting Days in the spring semester, I fell in love with the campus, enjoyed meeting my potential cohort mates, and found the assistantship opportunities unique compared to the other schools I was touring. When deciding between Florida State and my other options, I kept finding myself saying, "I think I would be happier at FSU," which I realized was the most significant deciding factor for me. No matter which institution I attended for graduate school, I would be prepared to be a strong professional in the Student Affairs field, so I made it a priority to go where I would be most happy. After graduation, I am planning on attending law school. My goal is to become a Title IX Coordinator or work in a General Counsel office at a university. About the Program: Established in 1957, Florida State University's Higher Education program boasts a long tradition of preparing students for successful careers. Faculty members and students regularly disseminate research on higher education policy issues at the national, state, and institutional level. Our program focuses on three central pillars: Student Success, Leadership, and Social Justice, and is situated in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
