The University?s mandatory First Day Non-Attendance Drop policy is in effect for the first week of Spring 2024 classes. The use of different delivery methods for Spring 2024 classes does not remove this requirement. Dropping students for first day non-attendance is necessary in order for the university to remain in compliance with Federal Financial Aid regulations (and students expect it). This policy requires all faculty and instructional staff to take attendance at the first class meeting of the semester. This policy is non-discretionary and applies to all classes, regardless of campus, space availability in the class, delivery method, course level, and/or academic unit offering the class. As a reminder, ?attendance? means making contact with the instructor as specified by the instructor at the start of the term. There are a number of ways this contact can be achieved. One way instructors can take first day attendance is via their Canvas course site(s). Please see First Day Attendance in Canvas for more information and options. If you use Canvas to satisfy the first day attendance requirement, please note that you still need to report your first day non-attendance drops as directed below. Methods for reporting and processing non-attendance drops: 1. Faculty ? For now, please continue to go to the following link for instructions and screen shots: How To Use the Attendance Roster Tool. 2. Staff ? For now, please continue to go to the following link for instructions and screen shots: How To Use the Attendance Roster Tool. 3. Email -- Send a message to registrar at admin.fsu.edu. Please include the student's name, EMPLID, the course prefix and number and the class section number. Staff will be monitoring this email closely and will be processing drops up until midnight on the 4th day of classes (Thursday, 11 January 2024). 4. myFSU Mobile -- Check and submit first-day attendance via the mobile version of Faculty Center. Simply download the myFSU Mobile app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play and follow these instructions (for now): How to Submit First Day Attendance via myFSU Mobile. 5th Day Classes and Non-attendance Drops: Once drop/add closes on Thursday, 11 January 2024, faculty will still be able to use the attendance tool for their Friday (12 January) classes. Please take attendance in any class that meets for the first time on Friday, 12 January 2024. Additional Information We are no longer processing administrative cancellation requests on the fifth day of classes. Students that need to drop all of their classes will need to be directed to the Withdrawal Services Office. Please join us for the third and final lecture in the Department of Art's 2023/24 Visiting Artist Series. FSU Department of Art Presents: Amina Ross Thursday, January 18th 6pm at the Fine Arts Building Rm. 249 530 West Call St. Tallahassee [cid:32c1cbab-6e55-4aa2-93e7-3821fc9e6164] Ross makes videos, sculptures, sounds, and situations. Their creative practice is characterized by a commitment to fragmented narratives, free-association, and the multiplicity of meaning within the interplay of images, words, sounds and signs. Drawing inspiration from the nuanced nature of language, Ross often uses language that carries double meanings, inviting viewers to explore layers of interpretation. Their artistic endeavors exist within a dynamic intersection of video art and sculpture, serving as a platform to explore themes of feeling, embodied knowledge, and intimacy as vital survival technologies, particularly for Black, queer, trans, and feminine-spectrum individuals. In the realm of video art and sculpture, Ross's work transcends conventional storytelling, they harness the evocative power of words and imagery to conjure deep-seated emotions and sensations. At the heart of Ross's creative inquiry lies an exploration of how systems of power shape our perception of reality. Ross?s work has been recently exhibited at the Hessel Museum of Art (Hudson, NY), the Tang Teaching Museum (Saratoga Springs, NY), Sentiment (Zurich, CH), Wave Hill (Bronx, NY), The Luminary (St. Louis, MO), Iceberg Projects (Chicago, IL), M23 (New York, NY) and Centro De Cultura Digital (Mexico City, MX) among other venues. Madison Street Quincy, FL Reception: Saturday, January 20, 2024, 5?7pm at Gadsden Arts Exhibition runs: December 16, 2023 ? March 23, 2024 Sam McCoy and Christopher Rivera explore Southern landscapes in this series of plein-air paintings. Each has taken a different approach while painting from scenes that they observe. Drawing inspiration from lush Florida?s landscapes, McCoy attempts to communicate the many complexities of the state?s tourist culture. Conversely, Rivera explores the connection between on-screen media and popular culture, using found video and imagery to inspire hyper-realistic landscape paintings. Through their art, the artists aim to encourage viewers to ponder their own relationships with nature. Both McCoy and Rivera graduated from the University of Central Florida with a BFA in 2018 and an MFA from Florida State University in 2021. McCoy is currently the Artist Programs Manager at Thomasville Center for the Arts in Thomasville, GA. Rivera is the Sculpture Lab Studio Manager and Studio Art Adjunct at Florida State University. ---------------------- Send details on all future department events directly to mivory at fsu.edu.
